Flame-grilled: Firefighters called to Yip Ho blaze

Burning oil blamed for the fire

Firefighters had to break into a Smithdown chippy after a fire broke out in the kitchen bin.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service has said that the fire was “accidental” and was caused by the kitchen rubbish bin.

Nobody was injured in the fire as the fast food joint was closed at the time.

The chip shop, before it set alight

Fire crews rushed to Yip Ho on Smithdown Road, Toxteth on Monday night to find a locked door.

They had to cut through the shop’s grills and break through the entrance door to get into the take-away’s kitchen.

A spokesperson for Mersey Fire stated that two fire engines and four pressure holders were sent to the scene, after receiving a phone call at 5:17pm.

The fire tape was removed from around the shop at around 6:25pm.

The chippy is located beside a specialist food shop and a gadget store.

Tom Blackmore, 22, a recent LJMU graduate who lived on Smithdown, said: “I never went there. I went to the greenbank chip shop if I ever wanted decent chips.”

Maybe flame grilled wasn’t his preference.
