There have been 18 sexual assaults on young people in Glasgow this year

Numbers have dropped from last year

Police figures reveal there have been 18 sexual assaults on 18-24-year-olds in Glasgow so far this year.

Although even one assault is unacceptable, the figure is a decrease from the 33 recorded in the whole of 2014.

Recently, the police have launched “Help Zones” across the city to help vulnerable students.

Yet evidently more needs to be done. A 24-year-old woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault at midnight near Central Station this September.

Many girls feel they must stick together on nights out, especially when walking home through areas such as Kelvin Way

Third year student Kirsty said: “I’m not surprised by the figure because sexual assault seems to be so common now.”

She went on to saythe precautions groups of girls have to take on night out is unfair.

“We literally always go out with the intention of sticking together ‘in case anything happens.’ Why should we have to be so cautious just to go out and have fun?’
