Exeter Uni sent an email out to students which was meant to be motivational but actually included a quote from Erwin Rommel, a Nazi General from World War II.

The email was sent by a member of the career advice service with the controversial quote being "randomly" generated from a website, according to the university.

The quote read: "One cannot permit unique opportunities to slip by for the sake of trifles."

The National Union of Students said that Jewish students are feeling "increasingly unsafe" at university, and many avoid applying to certain universities with "fears of anti-Semitism".

NUS went on to say that "Exeter must take appropriate action to rectify the damage caused and provide sufficient reassurances that something like this will never happen again."

A spokesman for the University of Exeter said that a career advice staff used the website Quotefancy to find a quote to put in the email.

They said: "Unfortunately, the staff member did not recognise the name attributed to the generated quote.

"This was a genuine error and in no way intentional, however, we apologise unreservedly for any offence it may have caused, and have put additional processes in place to ensure this doesn't happen again."
