We spoke to the organisers behind the TRUTH student club night

The event hopes to bring together students from the four Edinburgh universities

TRUTH is a hip hop and R&B club night taking place tonight at Eastside, with the aim of bringing together students from the four universities in Edinburgh, as well as promoting up-and-coming young artists on the hip hop scene.

According to the organisers, the event has been designed by students for students and will be a place where students from Edinburgh University, Herriot-Watt, Napier University and Queen Margaret University can all come together.

The event has been organised collaboratively between student-run TRUTH, Rocksalt Cafe, Aura Edinburgh and SAINTMIND, and is their pilot event.

There will be multiple music sets on the night, with it being a mixture of hip hop, R&B, urban, afrobeats and trap. Rocksalt Cafe will be providing food too.

The event’s headliner is SwitchOTR, a 19-year-old from Croydon who shared teachers with Stormzy growing up. His lyrics address his roots and his ambition to become an artist on a global level.

SwitchOTR is a strong advocate for dismantling stereotypes in music and in daily life, and he is fiercely proud of his Ghanaian heritage. Through his music, he wants to show people what self-belief, respect, hard work, and perseverance can achieve – no matter how young you are.

Other acts include Edinburgh based DJ Ellingtone and the East London DJ DBM.

Talking to The Edinburgh Tab, the event’s organiser and QMU student Fikayo said: “One thing we all have in common across the four universities is that we all like to go out.

“I set out to make TRUTH because there’s an opportunity in Edinburgh to gather students together, to connect, be inspired and to form long lasting friendships and relationships.

“The event means a lot to me because I want TRUTH to be a reminder to young people of what they can achieve if they live their truth.

“We can’t ever live someone else’s life, but we can stay determined to our dreams and make them happen.”

Tickets start at £9 and can be bought in advance here. Last entry is at 2am, with the event starting at 10pm.
