Cardiff, Swansea and Newport all ranked in the top 10 safest towns and cities in the UK

No Welsh town or city made it into the top 10 least safest

Cardiff, Swansea and Newport have all been placed in the UK’s top 10 safest towns and cities.

Swansea ranked the highest in second place, whilst Newport came in third and Cardiff just made the top 10 in tenth place.

Get Licensed, who did the study said it looked at ONS crime rates from the year ending June 2022 and listed the types of crimes committed, such as violent offences, criminal damage and more, in its rankings table. The total recorded crimes is a tally of all crimes committed except fraud.

According to the data, 60 crimes per 1000 people were committed in Swansea, 63 in Newport and 83 in Cardiff.

The most common type of crime committed in Swansea was violent crime against a person, followed by theft and then public order offences. This was the same for Newport. However, in Cardiff, the most common type of crime was theft, closely followed by violent crime against a person and then as with the other two Welsh cities mentioned, public order offences came in third place.

Swansea also had the lowest rate of robberies and possession of a weapon offences out of all the top 10 cities at 0.26 and 0.33 per 1000 respectively. Newport, on the other hand, had the lowest rate of sexual offences on the list at 1.50 per 1000 whilst Cardiff did not have the lowest rate of offence for any of the crimes listed in the study.

No Welsh cities made it onto the top 10 least safest towns and cities but the City of London came in first place on this list with 773 crimes per 1000 people.
