A crowd of students have gathered outside the Students’ Union today in protest at cuts to the Department of Employment and Learning, which may affect QUB.

We recently reported on how the Northern Irish department for Employment and Learning is set to lose 10.8% of funding, potentially causing a severe cut of University places, jobs and courses.

Ciaran, a Property Management student at UUJ who was involved in he protest said: “Students have been targeted because they are the least likely to speak out.”

Law and Spanish student Amy Kerr told us:  “It’s typical of politicians from here. They just don’t care about students at all.”

SU President addresses students at the rally

Numbers at today’s protest fell massively short of what was expected, with only a small crowd of students outside the SU.

QUBSU President Ciaran Gallagher said: “This is a cause for concern for the student body and younger family members.

“We will be the only part of the UK that will be dis-investing in education. It’ll be undermining Northern Irish education and therefore the job market at the end of it.”
He encouraged students to sign petitions and send letters to their MLA to support the campaign to stop the DEL cuts. A box has been provided to send the letters free of charge in the SU.
