Medic fresher’s death treated as ‘not suspicious’

First year Kellyanne Teggert, studying at University of Ulster’s Magee campus, died after a night out on Thursday

A 21-year-old man was released without charge this evening after police said the death of a medical student in Derry yesterday was “not suspicious”.

Kellyanne Teggert

Kellyanne Teggert, who had just begun her studies at UU’s Magee campus 12 days ago, was found unconscious and critically injured at the bottom of a flight of stairs after a night out.

An ambulance crew attended the flat just before 2.30am, and the 19-year-old was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.

She was pronounced dead later that night.

Kellyanne, from Portaferry Co. Down, had just begun her university career.

Just last week her mother had posted on Facebook: “Just home from Derry. Left my first born there to go to university. Will miss her but not the tidying up after her. Enjoy the student life but don’t forget to learn as well.”

Kellyanne had responded “Thanks guys I intend to enjoy myself!”

The medical student is believed to have been at a nightclub in Derry earlier that evening, and had left in a taxi at around 1am.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey said: “The death of any young person is always tragic, and I would first of all like to express my condolences to the relatives and friends of the young woman.”

A spokesman from University of Ulster said: “We are devastated to learn that this was a University of Ulster student and our thoughts and sympathies are with her family and friends at this time.”

Detectives had issued an appeal for information and were trying to trace Kellyanne’s movements between leaving the nightclub and 2am.

However, in a statement released this evening, PSNI have announced the death is being treated as “not suspicious”.
