Sam Taylor-Johnson ‘doesn’t understand’ the issue with her 23-year age gap with husband Aaron

57-year-old Sam Taylor-Johnson has spoken out about her controversial 23-year age gap relationship with her 33-year-old husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson, whom she met on the set of her film when she was 42 and he was just 18. Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have overcome their age gap, and the two married in 2012 and now have two daughters together who “aren’t bothered by their age gap.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, film director Sam discussed her controversial relationship, and how whilst there are times it is “uncomfortable” she doesn’t think it “really matters” anymore. She explained: “There are times when it’s uncomfortable. Most of the time, we zone it out and stay pretty private. We tend to retreat. Kids and school runs keep you pretty grounded.”

Sam also gave an interview to The Guardian earlier this month and addressed how the age gap between her and Aaron Taylor-Johnson “never” shows up in their relationship and that their children “don’t register” it. She explained: “We’re a bit of an anomaly, but it’s that thing: after 14 years, you just think, surely by now, it doesn’t really matter?”

As for their children, “They see two loving, happy parents, so it doesn’t really register. They just think people are a bit mean, or mad.” She also added that she is “a great believer that the heart overrides everything” and that “love conquers all.”

Her husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson has also spoken out about their relationship and told Rolling Stone UK that he doesn’t understand why people have an opinion on their marriage. He said: “You’re doing something too quickly for someone else? I don’t understand that. What speed are you supposed to enjoy life at? It’s bizarre to me. What you gotta realise is that what most people were doing in their twenties, I was doing when I was 13.” Yikes, that sentence speaks volumes.
