Season three of The Witcher is now on Netflix and while fans are rejoicing, they are faced with the fact this will be the last season with Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. Henry joined the cast in 2019 and originated the role and fans are pretty peeved he won’t be continuing. But why is Henry Cavill leaving The Witcher?

While there isn’t a 100 per cent clear answer, viewers have been thinking up theories while debating whether Liam Hemsworth would fill Cavill’s shoes. Here’s everything we know so far.

In October 2022, Henry Cavill announced he was leaving the role

In an Instagram post that amassed just under two million likes, Henry Cavill announced he would be leaving his role as Geralt in The Witcher.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season four,” he wrote.

“In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

Viewers noticed Henry wasn’t pleased with the creative direction of The Witcher

During the season two press tour for the series, cracks began to show between Henry Cavill and the showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Hissrich revealed Cavill had sent her several notes about Geralt’s dialogue for season two, after having read the books.

During an interview with Philstar, Cavill said he wanted to create a more book accurate Geralt. Cavill outlined that in the book, Geralt is more complicated than the one viewers see on Netflix.

“It’s important for me to have the character be three-dimensional,” Cavill said in 2021. “And it’s tricky to do, as I was saying earlier, because there’s a certain vision and there’s a certain set storyline and plot. And so, it was about me trying to find Geralt’s place within that. All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.”

He could also be leaving to pursue more projects

When the news broke, fans immediately assumed it was because Cavill wanted to focus on his work as Superman, however he later revealed she was not going to be returning.

However, Henry Cavill has a number of projects lined up that makes him a very busy man. Some of his upcoming projects include Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, spy drama Argylle and romance movie The Rosie Project.
