Are you interested in a career in journalism, content creation, or just want to spruce up your CV? Then The Newcastle Tab has a place for you.

Join our team of writers and content creators; whether you’re a writer, TikToker, or meme maker, The Newcastle Tab covers everything from the serious to the silly.

Maybe you want to cover nightlife, university scandals, or fun guides for the best places for a pint in the Toon; at The Newcastle Tab, you can write about whatever is important to YOU.

What you can do

Writing at The Newcastle Tab is split into two camps: features and news.

Features can be opinion pieces and guides on all things Newcastle and student life, whether it’s cool/underrated spots to go to for St Paddy’s Day, or a light-hearted guide on the types of men you might encounter whilst at uni. And trust us – people love the comedic specificity of those 🙂

Under the features umbrella, we also publish opinions. These are your chance to write about the issues that actually matter to you and get other students nodding (or arguing) along.

News involves speedy write ups of what is happening not only on campus, but in the wider community too. We cover news across the city to keep students informed. We carry out interviews and investigations as stories develop, so writing news can be really exciting and fast paced.

If writing isn’t your thing, we also have lots of opportunities to get involved in content creation across our social media platforms. This can include interviewing students on campus for TikTok videos as well as creating memes and video content related to Newcastle student life. If you’re a budding social media star, we’re keen to hear all your content ideas and can help you execute them.

Experience is not required for any of the areas that you can get involved in and you don’t have to pick just one – you could do them all, dip in and out of a few or stick with one. The world is your oyster, guys.

The Newcastle Tab is open to both Newcastle University and Northumbria University students, regardless of subject, year of study or previous experience.

This is your opportunity to work for a nationally recognised publication and build a professional portfolio alongside a dedicated team of writers and content creators. It looks great for your CV, and you’ll have LOTS of fun whilst doing it.

All levels of experience are welcome at The Newcastle Tab, and if you are inexperienced, not to worry – there’s a skilled editorial team, as well as seasoned experts from HQ to help and guide you through whatever it is you can bring to the table. 

Write or produce as much or as little as you want. There is no joining fee and no pressure; The Newcastle Tab is a student-run publication and understands that our writers have work, deadlines, and social lives. 

What is the Newcastle Tab?

The Newcastle Tab is run by students, for students. The Newcastle Tab is one of almost 30 local university branches that form part of one of the UK’s leading youth media sites, with more than nine million readers a month.

The Newcastle Tab has a combined following of 23,000 followers across social media platforms, meaning that your work will reach thousands of students across the Toon and beyond. There may also be opportunities to have your work featured on The Tab’s national site.

Former writers across The Tab’s student publications have gone on to write for the likes of the BBC, The Times, ITV, The Guardian, The Independent, VICE, Vogue, BuzzFeed and more.

Even if you don’t think journalism is the career for you, there are plenty of transferable skills you can gain from being involved, from writing to research, content creation, publishing, interviewing and editing – these are all valuable skills in many industries.
