Angry HYROX athlete details silly reason he was disqualified after ‘diarrhoea’ woman wins

A HYROX athlete is understandably angry after watching a woman with “diarrhoea” allowed to win the competition after he was disqualified. 

It all kicked off over the weekend in Beijing, with 24-year-old Joanna Wietrzyk allowed to continue with the competition – even as dark liquid ran down her legs. There was reportedly excrement everywhere, from the floor to the equipment athletes were using. Though HYROX responded and carried out its decontamination protocols, people questioned why such an instance was even accepted. 

“We recognise that this can understandably lead to frustration, questions and strong views within our community. Those concerns are legitimate and, as organisers, we must be prepared to hear them, examine what happened and take responsibility for continuing to improve. And we will. But there is an important line,” HYROX said in response to the backlash. 

The whole situation was incredibly odd, even moreso when you consider that Joanna won the whole competition. As the leading athlete, hundreds of competitors were forced to follow in her icky footsteps.

Competing in the Men’s Open category on August 13, Zarif Zakaria was a victim of “nature calling” right before the event. Like a normal person, he went to the toilet to relieve himself. He ultimately finished with a time of 1:27:48, but was then hit with a disqualification after the race.

“I got DQ’d just for going to the toilet before the race. How come people can race while having diarrhoea and not get DQ’d? Maybe it’s time for me to retire from HYROX,” he wrote on Instagram’s Threads. 

In a second post, he added: “Honest question — not as an athlete, but as a human. If you’re at a race and have to use the toilet before the start, causing you to be a few minutes late… should you be DQ’d? I’m asking because it happened to me.”

Some people questioned the validity of his claims, but Zarif soon returned with receipts. Official communications from HYROX clearly showed that he was disqualified for an “incorrect start time”, and not for another reason. 

It’s sparked an interesting question: Why does HYROX seemingly prefer athletes to soil themselves over going to the toilet?
