Sultans of Lancaster Experience owner receives Great Neighbour Award at BBC awards ceremony
Sal Munshi of the beloved campus spot expressed his feelings of “honour and privilege” upon receiving the award
The owner of Sultans of Lancaster Experience has been awarded The Great Neighbour Award from BBC Radio Lancashire.
Sultans owner Sal Munshi was one of four finalists who had been nominated for the award.
The Great Neighbour Award formally recognises Sal’s commitment to making the Lancaster district a greater place to live through regular acts of kindness and generosity.
Sultans of Lancaster Experience, which occupies sites on Lancaster University’s campus and Caton Road, Lancaster, is a well-loved food spot which specialises in flame-grilled kebabs and chicken, curries and burgers. The family-run establishment runs a variety of discounts and promotions exclusively for students part of their WhatsApp community.
Through Sultans of Lancaster Experience, Sal has provided food for Lancaster Royal Infirmary staff, local schools, homeless people, Morecambe FC staff and many more.
On Christmas Day 2025, Sultans delivered “over 500 meals… to those keeping us safe and caring for us when we need it most” to give back to the local community and provide meals for hundreds of key workers in the Lancaster and Morecambe area. Sultans added that “kindness, compassion and looking after one another” is what the Christmas period is all about.
Upon accepting the Great Neighbour Award and being asked about his charitable behaviour, Sal said: “It just makes me happy. But I would like to thank my family who have given me the platform and the Sultan Experience to allow me to do this, and my beautiful wife who supports me every single day.”
He later added on social media: “WOW. I’m honestly struggling to put into words how much this means to me.
“I feel incredibly privileged, humbled and grateful to have won The Great Neighbour Award at the BBC Lancashire Make a Difference Awards. To receive this recognition among thousands of people across Lancashire is something I will always treasure.
“To everyone in Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Every order, every kind message, every recommendation and every time you’ve walked through our doors has helped us keep going and made it possible for us to give back.
“One of the greatest privileges of running this business is being able to help people in the community I call home. Whether that’s sharing a meal, supporting a local cause or giving someone a reason to smile, those moments mean so much to me.
“Behind every meal we donate and every community cause we support are customers who choose to support us. I hope you look at this award and feel proud of the part you’ve played.
“We won this together. Thank you for being part of it, from the bottom of my heart.”
