Hear ye, hear ye! The Lancaster Tab is recruiting and we want you

Join us Tuesday 6th October at 6pm for our open meeting in Pendle College’s Harpley Lounge

Ever fancied a stab at journalism? Need to pad out that CV? Got a gift for campus gossip? We can guarantee the Lancaster Tab is just thing for you this academic year.

That’s right: We’re recruiting! Our open meeting will be taking place at 6pm Tuesday 6th October in Harpley Lounge (upstairs in Pendle College) and we’d love to see you there.

Whether you’re a fresher looking to find your tribe or a returning Lancaster student wanting a bit more extra-curricular experience, you’ll be warmly welcomed by our fabulous editorial team and returning writers… and, of course, a pack or two of biscuits.

Okay, but what even is The Lancaster Tab?

The Lancaster Tab is just one branch of The Tab, a national journalism publication with 30 student-led teams at universities across the UK.

If we do say so ourselves, it’s one of the most highly regarded and widely connected organisations for students looking for free journalism experience, media networking opportunities, and some serious exposure.

Across all of The Tab’s student Instagram pages, we’ve got close to a whopping 300k followers keeping up with our stories, not to mention the 14.5k following The Lancaster Tab page alone. It’s pretty safe to say we’re the place to go for student news!

What does The Lancaster Tab write about?

We write on all kinds of Lancs news; from serious stories to new local business openings, from politics to community events, we’re usually first on the scene to get relevant news out to students and residents alike.

It’s not all about news with us, though – we also write features, which are more light-hearted and can range from local guides to fun pop culture pieces.

If you’re not a big writer but still want to get stories out into the student sphere, we’d absolutely love to have you making social media content for us.

With the vertical video format becoming all the more popular in the journalistic world, we’d be thrilled to have more students ready to hop in front of the camera and tell the important stories straight to the screen, as well as get some great memes and relatable Lancs content out there.

What would I get out of being part of The Lancaster Tab?

The real question is what wouldn’t you get out of being part of this awesome team?

First and foremost, you’ll build a nationally published portfolio tailored to you and your strengths. You can choose the stories you report on and the content you create, as well as how much or how little you do with us. Whether you come to just one or every meeting, write two articles or 20, you’ll be an important asset to The Lancaster Tab team.

You’ll also get some incredible media training and experience, including virtual training sessions with The Tab HQ, experience using the popular writing website WordPress, and consistently writing to a house style guide (something pretty much all journalistic publications have). The skills you’ll gain from even just a little bit of Tabbing will look super impressive on your CV.

Previous student writers at The Tab have gone on to be part of some huge publications, such as the BBC, Vogue, The Guardian and The Tab HQ itself. The possibilities really are endless.

Aside from the professional benefits, The Tab is the perfect place to make some new friends. Every meeting is a chill space to come to, with or without story ideas, and form connections with other students away from your course or flat. We don’t bite, we promise.

Plus, it’s completely free. You can save your pennies for some fun socials with us throughout the year, from pub crawls to pumpkin painting.

Sounds right up my street, but what if I can’t make the open meeting?

No worries. If you can’t make it at 6pm Tuesday 6th October, we’ll be meeting for a training session at the same time the following week, Tuesday 13th.

For ease, every meeting from then on will be at this time in the same place: every Tuesday at 6pm in Harpley Lounge, located on the first floor of Pendle College.

We hope to see you there!

In the meantime, if you have any questions or want to know more, please feel free to DM us on our Instagram page. There will always be an editor happy to help.
