Another day, another tweet going viral that has made me question if I know anything about the world, or ever even open my eyes. Today, the tweet has posted a picture of a widely unregarded part of a laptop charger.
If I’m being totally honest, I’d never considered its existence before. “What’s the purpose of this thing in a laptop charger?,” the post said, clearly from someone who’s never given it much thought, either.
The picture pointed towards a cylinder shaped part, that you often see on chargers and USB cables. Here’s what it’s actually there for.

Ok, so what does this part of a laptop charger actually do?
No, that part of a laptop charger isn’t just there for fun. The cylinder part is called a ferrite bead, or ferrite core, or ferrite block. It has a few uses. It suppresses high-frequency electronic noise in electronic circuits.
Basically (or as basically as it can really get) the bead suppresses high-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency noise on the cable, stopping the cord from acting like an antenna that radiates interference to nearby devices or picks it up. The useful DC power passes through fine while the noise gets absorbed as a tiny bit of heat.
They have very low resistance and let normal DC or low-frequency signals pass through. They act like a resistor, and absorb unwanted high-frequency noise and turn that energy into heat. Chargers have a ferrite bead to block and absorb unwanted high-frequency electrical noise known as EMI.
Normal electrical current flows smoothly to charge your device. Meanwhile, rapidly changing electrical signals, that are generated by the power conversion process inside the charger or internal computer parts, are resisted and turned into a tiny amount of heat instead of traveling down the wire.
