Everyone’s awkwardly asking why we have hair on our toes and fingers and I’ve never considered it
The answer is way more extensive than I imagined
A few tweets have gone viral recently asking what appears to be the most simple question: Why do we have hair on our toes and fingers? And you know what, I’ve never even thought about it.
As much as you might try and deny it, hair on our toes and fingers is there. Even if it’s fair, and hardly noticeable, you will have it. Sorry! So, have you ever wondered what it’s there for?
“What’s the purpose of these tiny hairs on fingers,” one viral tweet asked. It attached a photo of two hands, circling hairs just above the person’s knuckles. Another shared a photo of two feet, asking the same thing about hairs that grow just below the toe nail, on someone’s toes.

So, why do we have hair on our toes and fingers?
Go on then, let’s get down to the science behind these hairs. Firstly, having a lot or a little hair in either of those regions is completely normal – everyone is different!
The tiny hairs are called vellus hairs, or sometimes just referred to as peach fuzz. They cover most of your body and help with a number of things. According to many reports, we have hair on our fingers and toes because of our evolution from pre-human ancestors, who had much more coarse body hair than we do.
As for what those hairs do, they don’t have a huge benefit, but they do serve us for multiple things. Most notably thermoregulation, or simply put, trapping a thin layer of air for warmth, and pulling out sweat to cool you down. Having short, fine body hair allows our sweat to cool us off more efficiently and quickly.
The hairs also offer light touch sensation – they’re connected to nerve endings, so you feel things brushing your skin. On top of this, they can also offer very minor protection from dust or debris.
