Rupert Grint finally reveals what he really thinks of new Harry Potter series and it’s telling

HBO’s new Harry Potter series is the most controversial TV show this year, and original cast member Rupert Grint has finally revealed what he really thinks about it. 

Arriving on HBO Max on Christmas Day, the series is a direct remake of the films with a brand new cast, based on the books by JK Rowling. Series one is going to be Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, and the second series is already in the works. 

A trailer came out last week, and it’s already getting a lot of criticism for basically stealing the limelight from the original films, which aren’t even that old and definitely didn’t need a remake. 

Plus, JK Rowling raking in even more money thanks to the series after her horrifically transphobic views has also left a sour taste in lots of people’s mouths. Even Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the original, isn’t sure how to feel.

He was asked if he’d watched the trailer at the Enter The Magical World 4 convention in France over the weekend, and it sounds like he’s still trying to get his head around the whole thing. And he’s not that keen. 

“I’ve seen it. I’ve seen it. I think it looks good. Obviously, it’s quite trippy, because it doesn’t feel like it was that long ago, we were there,” he said. The tone of voice he said “it looks good” wasn’t exactly very convincing. 

“I think it’s a natural… any great story that gets retold, it’s a good opportunity to get more out of the books. So I think it’s going to be interesting. Obviously, in one respect, it’s quite strange, but I wish them the best.”

Interesting? If that’s the only adjective he could think of, that really says a lot. Basically, there’s no drama, and he wishes them all the best, but he thinks it’s a bit strange that they’re remaking it and he’s not sure how it’s going to turn out.

Grint went on to reveal that he wrote a letter to the actor who’s playing Ron in the HBO adaptation, and really hopes he has the same experience he did. 

“I wrote a letter to Alastair, who’s playing Ron. I hope he has an amazing time, because for me, I had a great experience. It was a very different time. It’s going to be great, and I wish them the best,” he said. 

The actor is playing Ron Weasley on stage in New York next year in Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which he said is a really “full circle” moment.
