Rupert Grint has joined the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child cast – and everyone is shocked

He might not be making an appearance in the HBO Harry Potter series, but Rupert Grint has now joined the Cursed Child Broadway cast.

Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the original films, will be starring in the New York production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. 

Posting on his Instagram, Rupert said: “Dusting off the old robes. New York – see you all in February.” Talk about a shock announcement!

His stint is set to run from 2nd February until 30th May 2027 at the Lyric Theatre, meaning he will not overlap with Tom Felton, who is playing the adult Draco Malfoy until 3rd January.

Despite taking on his new role in the JK Rowling adaptation, Rupert Grint is one of the cast members who previously expressed disagreement with the author’s views on the transgender debate. 

After JK Rowling faced public criticism for her controversial views, Rupert issued a statement in 2020, saying:  “I firmly stand with the trans community. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment.”

Similar to Tom Felton, who plays an older Draco Malfoy, Rupert Grint will be playing the adult version of Ron Weasley in the 19-years-later, onstage sequel.

Speaking about the role, Rupert said: “Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life.”

He added that there’s something “so full-circle” about playing Ron again now that they are both fathers, calling the opportunity “somehow both very familiar and completely new.”

He recalled the first time he ever saw the Cursed Child onstage: “I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on Platform 9 3/4 and pick up where I left off.” 

Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, the shows producers said: “In joining our extraordinary company onstage at the Lyric Theatre in New York City, Rupert is not simply revisiting a role from his past.

“He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded, including a career that has taken him from film to television to acclaimed stage work on both Broadway and the West End.”
