The valid reason the Idaho murders house was demolished so quickly, and what stands there now

During The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare on Netflix, it is revealed that the house in which the murders took place was demolished, before the case had even gone to trial. During the show, family members of the four victims said they couldn’t understand why this was done so quickly, as they assumed the home was key for evidence.

In November 2022, four college students were brutally murdered in their university home, on King Road. Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle had all been killed. Bryan Kohberger, a Washington State University PhD student who lived 15 minutes away from the crime scene, was then charged with quadruple murder.

In December 2023, before the case had gone to trial, the house was knocked down. In the Netflix documentary, Jeff Kernodle, Xana’s father, said: “That whole house was evidence. As far as I’m concerned, there were still stains and things in that house that should have been left there. Until the end of the trial. But, they did it anyway.”

Kristi Goncalves, Kaylee’s mother, added: “It wasn’t that I didn’t want the house torn down, I mean nobody could ever live in that house again. But, my daughter didn’t just die in that house. My daughter lived in that house. That was where she took her last breath. And Maddie, and all four of those kids. Did it have to go right then and there? What was the point in just not keeping it up until after trial?”

Why was the Idaho murders house knocked down so quickly?

When the home was demolished, prosecutors said they had the details they needed to build their cases, for when a trial came around. So, the University of Idaho, which owned the property after a family donated it to them, made the decision to tear the home down.

The university said the move would help students still studying and living in the area to heal. “It is the grim reminder of the heinous act that took place there,” President Scott Green said. “While we appreciate the emotional connection some family members of the victims may have to this house, it is time for its removal and to allow the collective healing of our community to continue.”

The decision to tear down the home during the university’s winter break was made as an attempt to decrease further impact on the students who lived in the area.

In a further press release, it was added: “We know that every action and decision around this horrific incident is painful and invokes emotions. That is why every decision we have made this far is with the families of the victims and our students in mind.”

As of recent reports, the site still remains empty. A recent TikTok video showed overgrown grass in the area where the house had once been, alongside tributes for the victims.
