A new genre of music is taking over TikTok, and its name bizarrely relates to the toilet?!

A new “genre” of music called UK Poo is taking the internet by storm, and no one seems to know what the deal is.

Let’s start from the beginning. It all started when an X post promoting a song surpassed 19.2 million views, as a result of its questionable rap content.

The music genre would later be coined UK Poo by the Nottingham based musician, Cashyams, who said: “There’s a new genre of music growing on TikTok that I like to call UK Poo.”

The low quality, terrible auto-tune, questionable lyrics and CapCut transitions in the UK Poo videos have people questioning: Is this new “genre” satire, or actually serious?

I must admit that even I was sceptical about the seriousness of these artists. Especially with lyrics like “shake your bum bum, with your bum bum, shake your bum bum for all of my crew.”

But this new era of UK rap, catering to a freestyle rap audience, has taken off on social media. So much so that this past weekend saw the first UK Poo concert taking place to a sold out crowd, where the labelled “Big Three” performed their hits which have been “taking over the scene,” according to the TikTok creator MC.

Before we come to any sweeping conclusions of whether these artists are satire or serious, Cashyams has made a checklist for what exactly makes a video fit into the UK Poo genre.

In an interview with Dazed, the creator said: “To make a UK Poo video, it should be ‘British’ straight away.

“It needs to be filmed on an iPhone, preferably outside of a corner shop or your local pub, and if you can get a lime bike or a Nike Tech fleece in there, too – great!”

He continued: “There also needs to be a micro aggressive aesthetic to the whole video and the topic you’re singing about has to be a little outrageous.”

So, apparently Central Cee helped UK Poo come about

With such a lengthy and specific criteria, someone surely has paved the way for this genre to come about.

Cashyams suggested the blueprint began with Central Cee’s “watered-down version of UK drill,” as he chased the “hyper-British” aesthetic, which is beginning to be recycled and is resurfacing in the structures of the UK Poo videos.

And the traction these videos have been receiving is no coincidence. More small artists have seemed to see this as a way to break through, publishing snippets of their UK Poo music, and accumulating millions of views on social media. They all make the same kind of songs, with the same kinds of videos.

Some intersections do show, as they presumably would in the UK grime and drill scene. Cashyams explained: “There’s definitely classist and racial undertones to the joke.

“But, because I made the joke as a fairly lower-class black person, I think it’s different. It’s self-deprecating humour. Still, I see some people laughing at the joke in a way that needs to be unpacked.

“Like, how are you still laughing at this in the same way that I am?”

This UK Poo community, if you will, has been prominent on X, and the 22-year-old musician said: “Ever since Elon [Musk] took over Twitter, it’s been so crazy on there.”

“I think UK Poo is a net positive because, honestly, the alternative is people being called racist, classist and sexist slurs. I’d rather this.

“My whole timeline right now is full of British people of all different backgrounds coming together and laughing at the same thing. Meanwhile, I’m seeing people from other countries tweeting like, ‘What the fuck is UK Poo?!’ It’s really funny to see.”
