Ajike Owens’s mother shared an emotional message after Susan Lorincz was finally arrested
‘Her dying cannot be in vain’
Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor is heartbreaking, but one of the most powerful moments came long before the documentary was released, when Ajike “AJ” Owens’s mother, Pamela Dias, spoke publicly after the arrest of her daughter’s killer, Susan Lorincz.
Lorincz was arrested four days after she shot and killed AJ, a Black mother of four, in Ocala, Florida, in June 2023. The Netflix documentary lays bare the tragic chain of events that led to AJ’s death.
Susan Lorincz‘s arrest came only after mounting pressure from the Owens family, civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, and the wider community. “Only that it took four days is what came as a surprise. We knew that there was probable cause,” Crump said at the time.

Speaking in an interview just after the arrest, Pamela’s response was emotional, raw, and full of both relief and disappointment. She said she was grateful that an arrest was finally made, but the charge, manslaughter, didn’t feel like justice.
“Absolutely, absolutely. I’m happy that there was an arrest,” she said. “But I’m a little disappointed in the charges.”
For Pamela, the pain was deeper than the legal battle, it was about the four children AJ left behind. “Four children will never see their mother again,” she said through tears. It was the unbearable loss her family had to live with.
Even after the arrest, Pamela refused to stay silent. She continued to call for stronger charges and greater accountability, determined that her daughter’s death would not be in vain.
“I want justice for my daughter,” she said. “Her dying cannot be in vain.”

Pamela’s comments came as the community learned more about the long-running feud between Lorincz and AJ. The sheriff later confirmed that the killing was “not justified” under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, calling it “simply a killing.”
