‘He was like a brother’: A look at Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens’ long-term friendship

Right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk was murdered last week during an appearance at Utah Valley University. Many of his fellow influencers have spoken out after his death, including Candace Owens.

The American political commentator has millions of followers across her social media and hosts a talk show named Candace through Ben Shapiro’s media company, The Daily Wire.

People online were shocked to find out how close Candace and Charlie really were. In an Instagram story tribute, she shared several photos and videos of them from the past decade.

The political influencer also uploaded a 24-minute video on Facebook titled “To My Friend, Charlie Kirk”. In this video, she breaks down all the details of their friendship.

“I met him back in 2017, when Turning Point was this very young organisation. Nobody knew who I was, nobody knew who Charlie Kirk was,” she said.

Candace was the communications director for Charlie Kirk’s nonprofit organisation Turning Point USA, which focuses on spreading conservative politics in high schools and college campuses.

“He hired me on the spot,” she said. She worked for Turning Point from 2017 to 2019.

The two spent a lot of time together in this period, going to campuses across the United States and Canada for public speeches.

“We were totally locked in,” she said.

But Candace says their friendship wasn’t only about politics and work, saying: “Charlie and I were always laughing”

One particular moment Candace talked about was her introducing Charlie to Kanye West. The pair would listen to his song Power before every appearance to hype them up.

When Candace met her now husband George Farmer, Charlie was very supportive of their relationship. She shared a text exchange were they talked about how good of a fit he was for Candace.

Candace said she was equally supportive when Charlie met his wife Erika Kirk, and even helped convince her to marry him.

People started to think Candace and Charlie had fallen out after they took different stances on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Candace was dropped from The Daily Wire for her pro-Palestine views late last year after accusations of anti-semitism from her co-worker Ben Shapiro. But according to Candace, this disagreement never came between her friendship with Charlie Kirk.

“Never for a single moment did Charlie and I stope being friends,” she said near the end of the video.

“He was like a brother to me.”
