Details of ‘college age’ suspect released after Charlie Kirk was shot dead at university
The conservative activist was killed during a speech at Utah Valley University
The authorities investigating the death of Charlie Kirk have released details about a “college age” suspect.
Charlie Kirk was shot dead during an event at the Utah Valley University campus, in front of a crowd of approximately 3,000 people. He was in the midst of responding to students’ questions about mass shootings. No other injuries at the event have been reported.
Beau Mason, the Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner, said the investigation has made “a few breakthroughs”. They are investigating an individual who “appears to be of college age” and “blended in well with the college institution”.
The FBI has a video and images of the suspect, but they haven’t released these pictures yet.
Investigators traced the suspect’s movements through the college campus and onto a roof. They believe that after the attack he jumped off the roof, and fled into a wooded area. A rifle was found, which FBI investigators “believe to be the weapon that was used in yesterday’s shooting.” They are also examining a footprint and a “forearm imprint”.
Utah’s Department of Public Safety said Charlie Kirk’s death was as a result of a “targeted attack”. They stated: “The shooter is believed to have fired from the roof of a building down to the location of the public event in the student courtyard.”
In the aftermath of the incident, one man called George Zinn was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice, then released. Another person was also taken into custody, then released without being charged for anything. The Utah authorities said: “There are no current ties to the shooting with either of these individuals.”
The FBI is co-leading the investigation. They asked on X for the public to send in any tips about the shooting.

Charlie Kirk was a conservative activist and a prominent ally of Donald Trump. He founded the organisation Turning Point USA (TPUSA) at the age of 18. TPUSA aims to spread conservative ideas at more left-leaning college campuses. The event at Utah Valley University was part of the organisation’s The American Comeback Tour.
Kirk’s death was announced approximately two hours after he was shot. Donald Trump posted on Truth Social: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautifyl wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
