Political commentator fired from major TV channel after saying this about Charlie Kirk’s death

The MSNBC boss called his comments ‘inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable”

Political analyst Matthew Dowd has been fired from MSNBC after he made “inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable” comments about the death of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk.

During a stop for The American Comeback Tour at Utah Valley University, Charlie Kirk was shot 20 minutes into his speech. Videos showed the shocking moment in graphic detail, and even now, they’re still up on sites like Reddit and Twitter.

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie,” Donald Trump said following the news.

Though a man was taken into custody shortly after the fatal shooting, he was later released after being cleared of wrongdoing. The killer is still at large, according to the latest reports from the BBC.

What did Matthew Dowd say about Charlie Kirk’s shooting?

Speaking on MSNBC about the viral attack, Matthew Dowd noted how you can’t say “awful words and not expect awful actions to take place.”

“He’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups,” he said.

“And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that is the environment we are in. You can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we are in.”

Twitter was very divided on his comments, but following outrage from the right, MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler issued a statement.

“During our breaking news coverage of the shooting of Charlie Kirk, Matthew Dowd made comments that were inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable,” she said. “We apologise for his statements, as has he. There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise.”

Matthew Dowd clarified the comments he made on MSNBC

Posting to Bluesky after the backlash, Matthew Dowd clarified that “I in no way intended for my comments to blame Kirk for this horrendous attack.”

He said, “I apologise for my tone and words. Let me be clear, I in no way intended for my comments to blame Kirk for this horrendous attack. Let us all come together and condemn violence of any kind.”

Still, he was fired as a result of what many people saw as Matthew blaming Charlie Kirk for his own death.
