Explained: Tommy Fury’s race drama after accusations of faking miles and shoving rivals
Tommy sprinted into controversy again at yesterday’s Great North Run
Tommy Fury has not been the most popular person in the running community, but his antics over the past week really have solidified that.
Over the weekend, the ex-Love Islander was seen seemingly pushing a fellow competitor to one side just seconds before crossing the finish line at the Great North Run on Sunday.
This comes after accusations of Tommy “lying” about his miles after recently taking part in the T100 Triathlon in the French Riviera.
Somehow this is not Tommy’s first tackle with some running drama this year. From viral sprint finishes to allegedly pushing “grannies”, here’s a run down of the saga.
Pushing ‘grannies’ at a 10k race in January
@el_chic_boutique Tommy fury big finish at GNR 😅😅😅#fury #tommyfury #tommyrunning #fyp
Back in January this year, a video emerged that appeared to show Tommy Fury push an older lady to the side during a charity 10k race . He did address the viral clip later on Instagram after completing another race, where he joked that “no grannies were hurt”.
But new footage has come out from yesterday’s Great North Run that appears to again show Tommy pushing a fellow runner out of the way to get past. Yet again, the public are not impressed with his “terrible running etiquette”.
People commented, “Surely that’s a straight disqualification?”, and “Did he run all of it of fake it like the last one?”
Some have come to Tommy’s defence however, with one person writing: “Are people just looking for issues? Watch again and you’ll see its a tight corner and he’s about to run into the guy”.
He’s also being criticised for lying about miles in a recent triathalon

Last weekend, Tommy Fury took part in another race. The T100 French Riviera Triathlon compromised of 100km that involved swimming, cycling and a final 18km run to finish. In an Instagram post celebrating the day he wrote: “I left it all out in the French Riviera. 100 KM triathlon on 10 days training… completed.”
However, official timing data shows that Tommy did not cycle the full 80km distance, with results on Sport Stats from the T100 reporting his score as “DNF”, or, “did not finish”, making him one of 93 in the race to do so.
An investigation found that road closures had been shortened because the bike course for the amateurs had been changed since the event was announced. Tommy was within the group of amatures who would not be able to to finish the bike leg before the roads were reopened.
The Professional Triathletes Organisation said: “Due to our permit for the road closures in France, unfortunately Tommy and some other athletes in the 100km amateur race were unable to complete the bike course before the cut-off time.
“However, given our philosophy to grow the sport and encourage new athletes, we wanted to give them as full an experience as possible.
“So they were all given the opportunity to do the 18km run and cross the finish line.”
However, Tommy Fury did want to continue the race when the roads were reopened and completed the full 18km run before crossing the finish line.
Despite this, comments on the celebratory Instagram post are calling Tommy out for allegedly lying about completing the race, with people writing: “You should probably take this down…you didn’t do it”.
Another commenter wrote: “Officials have confirmed that you didn’t make the cut-off times yet here is the frightening world of social media…people would have more respect for you if you were honest.” Yikes.
Clearly he just loves a sprint finish
It appears that every alleged pushing incident has sprung from Tommy’s desire to “sprint finish”, a move that sent his running form viral after completing the Tatton Park 10k in Manchester at the beginning of the year.
The move has since been a social media sensation with Tommy even getting in on the fun by often asking on his Instagram Stories if he should finish his next race with a sprint.
Whilst I’m sure its a fun way to end a gruelling race you do have to wonder if simply stopping the sprints, would close the case on the drama. Just a thought!
