7 reasons why you should write for The Durham Tab

Reason 8 is because hot people write for The Tab xx

Thinking about getting involved in student journalism? Writing for The Durham Tab is one of the easiest (and most fun) ways to get started. Whether you’ve never written an article before or you’re already a published journalist, joining the team gives you the chance to share your voice, build experience, and be part of the student conversation in Durham. Here’s everything you need to know about writing with us – and exactly how to get involved.

First, who can write for us?

Anyone who is a current student at Durham University can write for us. You can be in any year (whether you’re joining us in October or a finalist) or on any course! And you don’t have to have any experience already. We are looking for any Durham students who are interested in student news, culture, and experiences; anyone with a sharp eye for stories, a sense of humour, or something to say about student life, campus culture, or the wider world can write for us.

How does it work?

We send out commissions weekly to our writers, so you can claim any of those pieces and write them. Just let us know which piece you’re interested in writing and, provided it’s not already been claimed, it’s yours. We also would love to hear your own ideas, so you can pitch an article to me or another member of the editorial team (find us on our pinned Instagram post!).

Now, here are some of the reasons why we think you should join our team!

1. You’ll get to join a team of writers – and we’ll have loads of socials

We’ve already got lots of people who are writing with us, as well as a team of editors. Joining The Durham Tab is an opportunity to meet other people who are interested in the kind of content we make! We’ll be running plenty of fun socials throughout the term, so whether you’re into pub trips, club nights, or just hanging out, joining us is a great idea if you’d like to meet like-minded students and make friends across colleges.

2. You’ll get to build journalism experience

Whether you’re a total beginner or Carrie Bradshaw herself, writing for the Tab will give you plenty of experience in writing for publication. Plus, you’ll have plenty of published articles for your portfolio.

3. Writing for us looks great on a CV

Writing for us looks great on a CV because it shows you can write clearly for a wide audience, work to deadlines, and create content that reaches thousands of readers. It demonstrates initiative, digital media skills, and creativity – all of which employers value. And, of course, it’s a great way to get to experience being a journalist!

4. Platform to make an impact

Having your writing on a platform like The Durham Tab means your voice can reach thousands of students, giving you the power to shape conversations, highlight issues that matter, and share stories that might otherwise go unheard.

5. Writing for us is really flexible

You can write as little or as much as you’d like for us, whether that’s one article a term or two a week. Writing for us is extremely flexible and can fit around your university schedule – the same way your contributions can fit to your interests and priorities.

6. There’s something for everyone

We write all sorts of content, from helpful guides, to trends, to serious news, to experience pieces and features. We publish articles on everything from Durham college stereotypes, to Durham’s best spots, to sports in Durham, to local news, to nightlife, to fashion. And, if you’re wondering if your idea would work for The Durham Tab, check out our recent articles and pitch an idea to us!

7. You’re invited to our open meeting:
