Cardiff Met student faces losing degree over financial struggles
A final-year student is at risk of not finishing academic studies due to his parents’ financial collapse
Omodamola (Damola) Adeneye is an international student in his final year at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Due to a lack of financial support from home and a decline in the Nigerian economy, he’s facing the heartbreaking possibility of not completing his degree.
Despite working tirelessly across multiple jobs since arriving in the UK to finish his studies, Damola is now financially supporting his family back home after their leather business collapsed due to economic hardship in Nigeria.
To support his 2023/2024 academic year, Damola had no choice but to take out a loan from a close family friend, which he is currently repaying through monthly instalments.
From his earnings, Damola has paid £36,000 towards his tuition fees and is in urgent need of at least another £12,000 to complete his studies and finalise his degree.
Damola is currently struggling financially due to the rise in living costs in the UK, and is unable to pay his rent whilst paying for his tuition fees. Damola is now staying with his friend Olaseni Oladejo, who has organised a fundraiser through GoFundMe to support Damola through his financial difficulties.
The fundraiser states, “Damola could no longer afford his rent while still paying tuition. Over the past year, I have had to accommodate him in my home so he could continue his education. We are raising funds to cover his last tuition payment so that he can graduate and finally see the reward of his hard work.”
Any support towards Damola’s fundraiser is appreciated, with the fundraiser stating “No amount is too small—let’s come together and help him cross this final hurdle. Your kindness and generosity will not just change one life—it will empower him to give back and help others in the future.”
