Applications are open until Thursday 1st May

York students: Are you interested in a career in journalism? Covering breaking news stories? Writing fun features and guides? Creating fun and engaging content for our social pages? Well, look no further, as The York Tab has officially opened its applications for the upcoming year’s editorial team!

It’s time for our current graduating team to step down and pass on the legacy to new, bright and keen students to run the best student media in York.

If you think you have what it takes to lead a team of student writers and thousands of monthly readers, keep reading.

Applications are open for all roles: Editor in Chief, News Editor, Features Editor, Social Media Editor and TikTok Editor.

Applications from all students are welcome regardless of previous experience, year or degree, but you do have to attend the University of York or York St John. You’ll have plenty of training from experienced editors at The Tab HQ to get you up and running, but being part of the editorial team means serious commitment – make sure you thoroughly consider that you will be able to bring your all to the team.

You don’t need to have written for The York Tab before, but, as these are editorial roles, some experience would definitely help! Mostly, we are looking for people who are enthusiastic about all things York, passionate about creating content York students will love, and can work well in a team.

The deadline for applications is Thursday 1st May

About the roles:

Editor in Chief

As Editor in Chief, you will have the most responsibilities across the editorial team. You will be in charge of the direction of the publication, overseeing the other sub-editors and your team of contributing writers.

You will be in charge of hosting weekly meetings, conversing with external groups (eg, the university, SU, and other organisations, depending on what stories are being written) and being the main point of contact with The Tab HQ and our Assistant Editor at HQ.

On top of this, you will help with editing and writing a range of stories, and working with social editors to make sure digital content is posted regularly. You will also be in charge of ensuring all content, both written and social, is consistent with The York Tab’s standard of quality and style.

This role needs serious commitment, but is also really rewarding.

The role is incredibly rewarding and a great experience to have in leading a large team in a fun and exciting environment. To fit this role, you should be friendly and supportive to new and existing writers, proficient in leadership, care about representing all student voices, great organisational skills, thorough in editing articles, and have a keen eye for the stories that will make an impact across campus.

News Editor

As News Editor, you’ll be responsible for making sure The York Tab continues to break the biggest and most exciting scoops across campus.

News is unpredictable and fast-paced, meaning you must be able to work quickly and efficiently when stories happen. You need to be able to sniff out a good story when you see one and contact organisations and people for comment.

You should have a keen eye for topical student news: Think student-led protests, or getting information when a lecturer does something shocking that is worth talking about.

You’ll be in charge of editing and publishing all news stories in a timely manner, working alongside your Editor in Chief.

Features Editor

For Features editor, we are looking for applicants with the ability to come up with witty and creative articles for our audience of York students. You will oversee and edit all features and guide articles for The York Tab, as well as bringing ideas to weekly meetings to commission writers.

An ideal Features Editor will be up to date with campus gossip and trends, creating niche and relatable content for our viewers. You’ll be able to cover every aspect of student life from nightlife to fashion and food.

There’s a lot of room to be creative in this role and we want someone who is fun, opinionated, and knows what students want to read.

Social Media Editor

As Social Media Editor you’ll have creative control over our Instagram, TikTok (alongside the TikTok Editor), Twitter, and Facebook which together have a combined following of over 20K. It’s important to post regularly to keep followers engaged and keep up our brand.

You must have an eye for the latest trends, memes and aesthetics as well as coming up with creative TikTok ideas to help develop our video journalism. This role is suited to someone who loves the ins and outs of social media and wants to gain some real experience.

Experience with Canva and other editing software is needed for this role for creating posts.
