Manchester students, fancy a career in journalism? Aren’t you in luck, guess who’s opened applications for their 2025/26 editorial team? Only the best society/student media/all-round good-time, The Manchester Tab!
We’re on the lookout for fresh new ideas, editors and shenanigans, as our current graduating team passes on the baton to the next generation of Tab legends.
The Tab is the biggest name in student journalism, nationwide, so you’ll be joining a team of writers who love being first, and making waves across campus with hard-hitting (and sometimes silly) stories.
So if you have a passion for writing, content creation, investigation and gossip, you might have what it takes to lead this years team into making Manchester great again. Read on for more info.
Applications are open for all roles: Editor in Chief, News Editor, Features Editor, Social Media Editor and TikTok Editor.
Journalism experience is not necessary, but definitely encouraged. Training will be provided to successful applicants from The Tab HQ, but being part of the editorial team means serious commitment – make sure you thoroughly consider that you will be able to bring your all to the team.
The deadline for submitting applications is Wednesday 30th April.
Editor in Chief
Taking on the role of editor in chief means you will have the most responsibilities across the editorial team. You will be in charge of the direction of the publication, overseeing the other sub-editors and your group of contributing writers.
You will be in charge of hosting weekly meetings, conversing with external groups (eg, the university, SU, and other organisations, depending on what stories are being written) and being the main point of contact with The Tab HQ.
Most Read
On top of this, you will help with editing and writing a range of stories, and working with social editors to make sure digital content is posted regularly.
This role needs serious commitment, but is also really rewarding.
If you are proficient in leadership, care about representing all student voices, and have overall great organisation skills, this might be the role for you.
News Editor
As news editor for The Manchester Tab, you will be in charge of the news stories that are published. News is unpredictable and fast-paced, meaning you must be able to work quickly and efficiently when stories happen.
You should have a keen eye for topical student news: Think student-led protests, or getting information when a lecturer does something shocking that is worth talking about. Any piece of gossip could become a huge story, so having your finger on the pulse for any campus news is key to the role.
Examples of things you could be writing include this piece on refurb concerns after asbestos was found in 196 locations in Manchester Metropolitan Library, or how huge floods left Manchester engulfed in water.
You’ll be in charge of editing and publishing all news stories in a timely manner, with help from your editor in chief if needed.
Features Editor
For Features editor, we are looking for applicants with the ability to come up with witty, creative and opinionated articles for our audience of Manchester students. You will oversee and edit all features and guide articles for The Manchester Tab, as well as bringing ideas to weekly meetings to commission writers.
An ideal Features Editor will be up to date with campus gossip and trends, creating niche and relatable content for our viewers. Examples of topics you can write about range from this explainer on Manchester students’ worst experiences with bouncers to this comprehensive review of Manchester Met halls for those on the hunt for accommodation – or even this definitive review of post-night out takeaways.
Social Media Editor
The Social Media Editor will have the responsibility to create posts and stories for our Instagram. With over 12k followers, it’s important to post regularly to keep our audience engaged and keep up our brand. As well as condensing long-form content into a post, you must be clued up about meme culture, on the ball to keep The Manchester Tab on trends, and be confident in front of the camera for video interviews.
You’ll work closely alongside the TikTok Editor to create a mix of silly and serious content, and help design plans to expand our reach across the city.
Experience with Canva and other editing software is needed for this role for creating posts.
TikTok Editor

Similarly to the Social Media Editor, our TikTok Editor must be up to date with online trends and Manchester Uni culture. You must also be skilled in various editing software to create our TikTok content, which involves recreating viral trends for our audience, making any long-form content into an eye-catching video and being confident in front of and behind the camera when conducting interviews for our platforms.
