Every single time Verity used her pendant in Black Mirror’s Bête Noire and we didn’t clock it

We really need to be more vigilant when watching Black Mirror

It’s hard to pick just one episode from Black Mirror season seven, but if you forced me to under threats of putting Rivermind in my head, it might just have to be Bête Noire with that damn magic pendant. Broaching the always confusing theme of parallel realities and quantum mechanics, Bête Noire sees our main character, Maria, plunged into insanity with the arrival of an old school friend called Verity. Things just aren’t what they seem until the big reveal at the end.

Though not fully explained, Verity has been using a quantum computer to jump between realities using her pendant remote control. Essentially, what she says becomes the reality, and she specifically picks realities where Maria is “the only one who knows what’s going on.” Verity obviously employs the nifty pendant throughout the episode, but we viewers don’t question it until the big reveal at the end – so here are all the moments we missed.

Verity uses the pendant in her first scene in Black Mirror’s Bête Noire

Verity

People have been collating instances of pendant usage on both TikTok and Reddit, and it makes me question how none of us spotted it until the final moments of the second episode.

Just four minutes into the episode, we are introduced to Verity in a focus group trying out Maria’s new umami chocolate. Literally everyone in the group hates the flavour, that is, until Verity begins fiddling with her necklace and insisting that “on the second one, it’s like 10 times better.” Just a few moments later, the rest of the group is recanting their earlier statements about the salty choccy being rank.

She uses it to create a job and then the qualifications to book it

Verity

Next, when Maria and Verity meet each other in the bathroom, the latter invents a job on the website by touching her pendant and talking about it. What do you know, just moments later, there’s a job advert on the website.

The next time we see Verity using the pendant is in her job interview with Maria’s boss Gabe, telling him that she “enrolled in a catering course at Oxford Brookes.”

It’s Barnie’s, right? Or is it Bernie’s?

We then see it again in the Barnie’s versus Bernie’s argument to make Maria look crazy. Despite Maria’s boyfriend working at the restaurant, she discovers that the name has always been different.

Honestly, it’s a little difficult to reveal what the actual name is because people think Netflix is playing a trick on us with different versions in circulation.

Verity uses her pendant on the email

After Verity manages to get the job she is wholly unqualified for, Maria sends her a list of ingredients via email that definitely included carrageenan and NOT pork-based gelatini. However, when it comes out that the recipe did include meat products, the email suddenly changed to support Verity’s narrative.

Her most dastardly deed yet – creating early morning meetings

Black Mirror

As the episode slowly builds to a dramatic confrontation, Verity uses her pendant once again to make Maria late for a meeting that took place at 8 am. I know she did some pretty horrible things, including making a woman jump from a building, but this is undeniably her most evil deed.

We then have almond milk gate, with Verity using the pendant to make Maria the culprit despite us literally watching her drink it.

Um, what’s nutallergy?

When Maria is exposed as the almond milk thief through CCTV, something Verity also wishes into existence with her necklace, she brings up the argument that she is allergic to nuts. The following scene is mind-bending to watch as no one understands what a nut allergy is and even Google is like “huh?”

The final confrontation is packed with pendant usage

Obviously, by the end of the episode, Verity somewhat explains the pendant to Maria. In a showy display of its power, she switches their positions, takes them to the office, changes the colour of her shirt, makes Maria speak Chinese, and gets the police to arrest her. Ironically, the final usage of the pendant is actually from Maria herself after she shoots Verity in the face.
