Lizzo is getting absolutely dragged for shading two pop legends on a podcast

Lizzo is one of those artists in music who is always at the centre of getting dragged. Whilst I used to be quite a fan of her during the 2019 breakthrough era, it must be said she really doesn’t seem to help herself. And whilst I can understand that these two things that she’s finding herself dragged for online I don’t think Lizzo intended to come across as bad as they did, it’s a big yikes as the fandom of two iconic pop stars took umbrage with the shady comments and faces pulled when she appeared on a recent podcast. Uh oh.

Lizzo went on the podcast with Bob the Drag Queen and Monet X Change last week, and Twitter has been dragging her for these comments ever since. Let’s get into it.

People aren’t happy with her Britney Spears comment

Nobody thinks of THE Britney Spears as a Janet Jackson impersonator. She literally crafted her own sound and imagery at 16 and became the blueprint for every new pop girl.

In one clip on the podcast, Lizzo is raving about Janet Jackson. Very understandable, obviously, because Janet is an absolute legend. However, this comment Lizzo made about Britney Spears on the podcast got her dragged by Britney fans and the wider field.

Lizzo said “Britney Spears is doing a Janet impression, and she said it” – which some have interpreted to be disparaging to Britney Spears’ own legacy as a pop star. By Britney’s own admission, she was hugely inspired by Janet Jackson and Madonna in her career and has often paid tribute to both of them and spoke of her love and admiration – but I think to call her entire career an impression of Janet is undermining to Britney’s own impact in the cultural landscape.

One tweet said “Britney’s music has stood the test of time”, with others saying Lizzo should worry about her own engagement and commercial success right now as her latest era struggles to take off in popularity.

In another video clip from the podcast, Lizzo says “I have to really clear up some sh*t, because people came for me on the internet because I said Janet Jackson was the queen of pop. There were no such things as pop divas before Janet. Janet was first. She was famous when Madonna was a kid.”

Whilst Janet Jackson was famous because of her family, it’s worth noting that Madonna had two hugely successful pop eras before Janet had her breakthrough.

I’m happy that Lysol is not a fan of Madonna. Madonna’s music is sonically light years ahead of everyone, genre bending, and thought provoking. Lysol makes music for Seltzer commercials so it tracks. 🤷🏻‍♂️

There was another clip where Bob the Drag Queen, who opened with Madonna on her acclaimed celebration tour, says “the only pop diva who is not a millennial or a Gen X is Madonna. She’s the queen of pop.”

Lizzo then pulls some faces that have NOT gone down well.
