Leeds Students’ Union crowned the best small music venue of the year

The university union was among Take That and Peter Kay in winning one of the Ticketmaster 2025 awards

Leeds University Union has been crowned the best small music venue of the year in the 2025 Ticketmaster awards.

The annual awards allow music fans to vote for their favourite act, comedian, sporting event and attraction of the year, alongside the best music venues.

In a post on Instagram, Leeds University Union said: “We’re delighted to announce that we have won Small Venue of the Year at the Ticketmaster Awards 2025!

“We want to say a massive thank you to our hardworking team for making this possible, and what a way to kick off the year”.

Praise for the venue comes as no surprise as the union boasts a well-established, intimate gig space. In recent years it has hosted the likes of Johnny Marr, Fontaines D.C. and Glass Animals.

It is set to welcome more exciting acts this year such as The Futureheads, Nubiyan Twist and The Zutons.

Founded in the 1870s as a society of the Yorkshire College, Leeds University Union is home to The Riley Smith Theatre, its oldest venue, which has hosted many performances and ceremonies, and Stylus, where the popular Leeds club night, Fruity, takes place.

As well as being an exciting venue, the union prides itself on its commitments to empowering young people and creating an inclusive environment for all university students.

The venue was picked out of a selection of other small gig spaces including SWX Bristol, Hackney Church and Glasgow Students’ Union. Leeds University Union picked up an award alongside its northern neighbours in Manchester, with the Co-op Live crowned the best large music venue of the year, The Hoot reports.

Other winners included Take That for act of the year, Peter Kay for comedian of the year, Wicked for West End show of the year and London Athletics Meet 2024 for sporting event of the year.
