Serial players to hopeless romantics: Here’s each Russell Group uni as a romcom lead
Cher SCREAMS Exe-tah
It’s February – which means hopeless romantics and chronic singles alike are deep in their romcom binge fest.
From classics like When Harry met Sally to brand new films like the latest Bridget Jones, there’s so much choice this Valentine’s season. But whilst deep in the world of love and romance, conveniently avoiding responsibilities and deadlines at all cost, one can’t help but wonder who would each Russell Group uni be as a romcom lead.
From Leeds and its nightlife to Bristol and its fashion, every uni has a strong stereotype. Call it imagination or mild obsession, but the characters in our fave romcom movies have strong personalities – so which Russell Group uni would they be as a romcom lead? Lets find out.
University of Nottingham – Jamie (Friends with Benefits)

The chaos of New York City and their turbulent relationship is incredibly reminiscent of a Notts situationship. Jamie is charismatic and full of energy but that doesn’t take away from her strong work ethic.
Jamie knows how to balance work and having a good time, much like the humble University of Nottingham. Work hard, play hard.
University of Oxford – William (Notting Hill)

Let’s be real – only an Oxford student is meeting the love of their life in a travel bookshop. William is charming, intellectual and slightly pretentious – Oxford, we know you can relate. His awkward flirting and posh accent result in him stumbling his way into a relationship and frankly that’s how I imagine it happens in every library at Oxford University.
University of York – Lara Jean (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before)
Most Read

Lara Jean’s innocent and sweet nature encompasses York. She’s quirky, cute and slightly clumsy— that’s pretty representative of the York vibe as a romcom.
We don’t want to call York (or To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) boring, but this one is pretty tame compared to the others and that’s reflective of the University of York’s quiet vibe, versus the likes of Nottingham or Leeds.
University of Cambridge – Edward (Pretty Woman)
![](https://cdn.thetab.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/12094926/VS-YouTube-PrettyWoman1990-WhatdoyoudoEdward-000.png)
via YouTube
Edward’s reserved energy is very Cambridge – not to mention the old money vibes. He’s academically successful but arguably a little bit bland, but maybe he just takes a while to come out of his shell.
If Edward went to a UK uni, Cambridge would probably make the most sense. With his quiet intelligence and awkward demeanour he’d fit right in.
London School of Economics – Margaret (The Proposal)

A workplace romance felt fitting for the workaholic reputation of LSE. Although Margaret and Andrew’s relationship starts out as for convenience only, throughout the film, it blossoms into something real and we wish that for every ruthlessly ambitious LSE student.
Please take a day off.
University of Leeds – Kat (10 Things I Hate About You)
![](https://cdn.thetab.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/12092517/VS-YouTube-katstratfordbeinganicon-051.png)
via YouTube
With her edgy style and fierce attitude it only makes sense that Kat represents Leeds. Kat’s not like the other girls— her music taste is angst-y and her fashion sense is a bit too indie for her American crowd but she’d fit right in, in Hyde Park.
Not to mention her dancing on the table scene while people watch from the balcony is SERIOUSLY giving Disco Spoons energy. Her Instagram posts inside the Brotherton Library would seriously serve though.
University of Exeter – Cher (Clueless)
![](https://cdn.thetab.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/11211410/VS-YouTube-CluelessIloveJoshHDCLIP-125.png)
via YouTube
The blonde hair immediately gives it away but Cher SCREAMS Exet-ah. If Exeter girlies went to an American high school, they’d undoubtedly go around saying, “as if!”, so it just makes sense.
Cher means well, but she’s a little out of touch with reality. Much like a large population of the University of Exeter, we know she’d be outraged upon discovering that not everyone goes skiing every winter.
Newcastle University – Jacob (Crazy, Stupid Love)
![russell group uni romcom](https://cdn.thetab.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/12105316/VS-Netflix-CrazyStupidLove-4301.png)
via Netflix
The absolute chaos of this plot is only reflective of Newcastle’s wild reputation. Jacob is a social butterfly and would undoubtedly skip every club queue on a Newcastle night out.
However, Jacob isn’t completely shallow – he reinvented himself. Much like Newcastle University, Jacob is an underdog and we have to respect that.
Durham University – Freddie (Wild Child)
Posh son of the headmistress at an all girls boarding school— it only seems right. Freddie’s got that British upper-class charm that can be found in some Durham boys and he undoubtedly grew up playing rugby every weekend.
After high school, Freddie definitely went on to a uni with candlelit dinners, sipping red wine at every formal. Known for its formals, Freddie would definitely be Durham Uni.
University of Manchester – Andie (How to lose a guy in 10 days)
![russell group uni romcom](https://cdn.thetab.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/12110459/VS-Netflix-HowtoLoseaGuyin10Days-8655.png)
via Netflix
Her laid back yet quietly determined attitude towards love and life screams Manchester. Although not quite as glam as Andie’s New York lifestyle, Andie would spend her first year at Manchester out with the girls at 256 and probably studying digital media or politics. Andie is the type of girl who’d be dancing on the bar table at Albert’s Schloss and still make it to her 9am the next morning.
Andie’s cool confidence would totally fit in with the University of Manchester’s chill vibe.
University of Edinburgh – Sally (When Harry Met Sally)
![russell group uni romcom](https://cdn.thetab.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/12112429/VS-YouTube-WhenHarryMetSally611MovieCLIP-IllHaveWhatShesHaving1989HD-046-e1739359505917.png)
via YouTube
Smart, well read and bit unconventional, Sally is the epitome of the University of Edinburgh. This film is a timeless classic of an old school romance and that just fits Edinburgh’s understated but sophisticated reputation.
University of Glasgow – Bridget (Bridget Jones)
![russell group uni romcom](https://cdn.thetab.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/12113347/VS-YouTube-BridgetJonesBeingIconic-BridgetJonessDiaryRomComs-046.png)

Glasgow is the Russell Group uni paired with romcom legend, Bridget Jones. Bridget’s endearingly chaotic nature would shine at Glasgow. She’d have a love/hate relationship with the grind and begin every new semester with a bullet journal. Like many Glasgow students, she’d probably spend her days caught between a complicated situationship and her English literature dissertation.
