Inside Donald Trump’s drama-filled day out at the Super Bowl, and how much it cost
Couldn’t he watch the game on TV and save the whole country money?!
Er, so yesterday the former host of The Apprentice and current president of the United States of America, Donald J Trump, became the first sitting president to go to the Super Bowl. It was a pretty eventful outing – with him ranting about Taylor Swift, and Kendrick Lamar’s performance seemingly taking a dig at him. The event took place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Here’s a deep dive into what Donald Trump’s big day out at the 2025 Super Bowl was like, plus how much it cost the American taxpayer. Secret service security staff don’t come cheap, people.
Yes, Donald Trump was watching the Super Bowl
He strolled around the pitch with his daughter Ivanka, his son Eric and his grandson Theodore. He waved melodramatically. Some people did cheer. Some people did also boo him, but you don’t see people writing that on Twitter so much.

Trump then shook hands with a couple of the Kansas City Chiefs players. He sat with the commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, plus the businesswoman Gayle Benson who owns the team who owns the New Orleans Saints (the Super Bowl was at that team’s stadium).
He decided to pose for pictures with the families of victims from the New Orleans terror attack in January. And also the Mahomes family.
Trump dramatically stood still doing a salute during the national anthem.

Travis Kelce liked that Donald Trump was there?!
Most Read
He told reporters ahead of the game that to play in front of the president was “a great honour”. He said, “I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life, you know, and having the president there, you know. It’s the best country in the world. So, that’d be pretty cool.”
Travis Kelce might have changed his tune after Donald Trump’s latest Twitter rant about Taylor Swift.
He randomly reignited his feud with Taylor Swift
So, Taylor Swift was in a private box with Ice Spice and the HAIM sisters. When the screens showed Taylor Swift, the crowd all booed. This happens quite a lot when Taylor makes an appearance at football games – some people might be annoyed that the cameras keep showing her, and some people might be supporting the team playing against the Chiefs.
🔥🚨BREAKING: Taylor Swift was shocked when she started getting booed with Ice Space when they were displayed on the jumbotron at the Super Bowl which caused Taylor to say :“what’s going on?” pic.twitter.com/rmYEpKS1CK

Donald Trump, however, came up with an entirely different reason for why people were booing Taylor Swift. Trump posted several clips of the moment on his interestingly-named social media platform TRUTH.

He also wrote: “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”
Please note that Taylor didn’t leave the game after the crowd booed her, we’ve got no evidence the boos were all because she endorsed Kamala Harris, there were also plenty of Swifties screeching with delight at the sight of her, and “stadium” should not be capitalised x
How much did it cost American taxpayers for Trump to watch the football game?
A hell of a lot. Donald Trump is the first sitting current president to go to the Super Bowl for a reason – presidents usually avoid really crowded events like sports matches and concerts because the security has to be so intense and costly. American taxpayers do pay for the president’s security costs and travel and things. It generally costs about $3 to $4 million for a US president to take a short trip to somewhere else within the US.
Donald Trump travels pretty much everywhere by private jet. There were reportedly far more security staff than normal in the area of New Orleans around the stadium. This is most likely because of the horrific attack in New Orleans on 1st January, and because the assassination-prone president was around. It’s been reported that armed guards and police dogs patrolled the stadium, snipers waited on rooftops in the busy area outside the stadium, and lorries had to drive through a giant X-ray machine.
Estimates for how much it cost for Donald Trump to go to this football game are generally at around $15 million (£12.1 million).
He left the game really early?
Honestly, after all that faff you’d expect him to at least watch until halftime. But Donald Trump was spotted clambering up the steps to his jet a solid hour before the game ended. Maybe he’s a Chiefs fan (leading WAG Brittany Mahomes is definitely a fan of him) and didn’t like that they were losing? Maybe he was unimpressed with Kendrick Lamar’s performance? The musician wormed in plenty of political symbols into his set. His all-black dancers wore red, white and blue to make up the US flag. Samuel L Jackson dressed up as Uncle Sam (the weird wartime personification of the USA) and told off the dancers for being “too ghetto” and saying “America wants slow, chill music”.
Or, more likely, it wasn’t logistically possible for Donald Trump and all his secret service security to leave the stadium at the same time as everyone else.
