Wait, is Instagram auto-following Trump now he’s President? Here’s a likely explanation
Demi Lovato and Cara Delevingne are amongst the celebs who claim something sus is happening
In the wake of the inauguration of Donald Trump returning as President of the United States, and JD Vance taking up the mantle of VP, there has been some online hoo-ha and straight up suspicion that social media platforms owned by Meta are making users follow the Republican leaders on Instagram. Celebrities like Demi Lovato and Cara Delevingne have gone viral as they call this out, raising flags and saying the platform is refusing to let them unfollow. There could be a simple theory and explanation on why this auto following might be happening for Trump on Instagram – and it’s all to do with the transferring of official accounts.
Demi Lovato shared to her Instagram story that she claims to have unfollowed JD Vance on the VP US government official account twice and the platform won’t let her do it, calling it ‘shady business’.
Cara Delevingne also posted a screenshot to her story claiming that it’s ‘happening to me’.
So what is actually going on?
One explanation is that when the old government leaves and the new presidency term begins, the accounts transfer over on Instagram from the old President and VP to the new. When this happens, all previous posts are archived and the followers literally transfer over. At first glance, it could look like you’d followed a new account with no prior knowledge.
Have Meta said anything about claims Instagram is auto following Trump?
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on Threads that the official President Instagram account and White House accounts “change when the occupant of the White House changes.”

Stone explained further that Meta is experiencing “an issue affecting people’s ability to search for a number of different hashtags on Instagram — not just those on the left. We’re working quickly to resolve this.
