Crashes cheating and bugs: Here’s why the Squid Game update has enraged Warzone players

‘Might wanna investigate the rest of the game while you’re at it’

Call of Duty: Warzone players have reported everything from rampant cheating to in-game crashes following the launch of the game’s crossover event with Netflix’s Squid Game.

After the overwhelming success of Squid Game season one and the powerhouse that was the second season, it was to be expected the Netflix show would appear in other media. As we know, the unofficial Fortnite crossover has been a huge success. Though Warzone players were eager to test out the new mode following the conclusion of the Christmas event, it seems that even in video games, Squid Game is wreaking havoc.

Everyone is moaning about Squid Game X Warzone on Reddit

There are, of course, teething problems in any new rollout of a video game feature, or don’t you remember how buggy Fortnite was when it was first released? Nonetheless, it’s still infuriating when all you want to do is sit down and shoot some people with your friends.

Warzone players learned this first-hand earlier this month when Squid Game X Warzone launched on January 3rd. The mode itself sees shooters attempt a series of rotating challenges within the Urzikstan map, with each losing team being eliminated in a graphic fashion at the end of the round. Though people expected sudden rounds of Red Light, Green Light, they weren’t expecting the litany of problems created by the event.

In his scathing takedown in Forbes, Erik Kain wrote: “The first match, one of my friends froze on the loading screen. He had to force close his game and restart. The same thing happened to him when we tried again, so we tried to play a match on Rebirth Island. This time, both my friends were kicked from the party and I dropped in alone. So I backed out.

“We tried again. This time, I got an error message: ‘our level fastfile is different from the server’ popped up. I was kicked from the match, but not the party. Both my friends were able to get into the match, but dropped out so we could play together. We all restarted our games and loaded up again. My game froze trying to join the party. I force-closed it and tried again. We loaded into a match and every single one of us got stuck on the loading screen. We gave up.”

There is more of the same on Reddit, with people further complaining about their frame rate dropping to below-optimal standards. According to Erik’s report, Steam player count fell by 50 per cent a month after launch.

After receiving reports, the developers penned on Twitter: “We’re investigating reports of some loading screens causing instances of freezing or crashing.”

Still, the issues are seemingly persistent because both Reddit and Twitter are still engulfed in complaints about the Squid Game and Warzone event.

One person wrote: “I wanted to play but I can’t! five-10 minutes of play and the game crashes. The game crashes with error code 0x887a0005. This started after today’s update!”

“Warzone servers are genuinely a dumpster fire right now. Trying to play quads tonight and we went through multiple games where at least one person didn’t get in. I think I had to reboot my game like six times? But hey, at least those squid game operators are working?” another said.
