Yay! Season three may end Squid Game, but Netflix has something even more exciting coming
The news definitely softens the blow of season three being the end of Squid Game
Netflix’s Squid Game has become a worldwide sensation, and though we already know it will be coming to an end with season three in 2025, director Hwang Dong-hyuk claims Netflix has one or two secrets up its sleeve.
Originally, the Korean Netflix show was only supposed to get two action-packed seasons, but after the overwhelming success of the first season and the ever-expanding pool of ideas, Dong-hyuk just couldn’t stop.
“When I first started writing… I thought it would just be season two,” he recently told The Wrap. “But the story got longer, and because I included a lot of characters and more incidents, the episodes increased.”
After sitting down with Netflix, it was decided that season two would be cut down the middle to give us a deeper plot and more time to grow attached to the characters. But even after the conclusion in 2025, it looks like Squid Game will be getting an MCU-style expanded universe.
“I know Netflix has a plan. They are not going to throw this idea away,” the director told the publication.
Of course, Netflix has already expanded the Squid Game universe with 2023’s Squid Game: The Challenge which has been greenlit for a second season. David Fincher is also developing an English-language version of the series.
Dong-hyuk added: “Maybe I’ll be in one of those projects as an advisor or co-creator. Who knows? But Season three is not going to be the end of the ‘Squid Game’ universe.”
Depending on how the series ends next year, there could be countless avenues for Dong-hyuk to explore in future installations of the franchise. Personally, I would love an eight-episode run of police detective Hwang Jun-ho just looking at the camera.
When does Squid Game season three come out?

Because season three was originally part of season two, most of the plot, character development, and ending are already in place. Filming is still going on but is expected to end fairly soon.
Hwang Dong-hyuk earlier told Variety, “I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season three soon. I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year.”
The final season will reportedly be centred around the ongoing conflict between Gi-hun and the Front Man who we know has been cosplaying as a contestant in season two.
“You’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in season two,” he added.
I am seated, but I’m not ready.
