Er, Michael Gove was caught kissing a Uni of Oxford lecturer in a fancy restaurant?

She’s 32 and he’s 57

The 57-year-old Tory politician Michael Gove seems to be dating a 32-year-old University of Oxford lecturer. Really.

Michael Gove was photographed snogging the Oxford lecturer Dr Lola Salem this weekend. The couple were enjoying a meal together at a mega-boujie fish restaurant called J Sheekey in Covent Garden.

They drank white wine, if anyone cares. Dr Lola Salem appears to have eaten grilled lobster with chips. The dish costs £65.00.

The couple also rocked up to The Spectator’s summer party together. We don’t know whether they were in a relationship back then, or if they were just friends. The mega-fancy event was in Westminster. Nigel Farage, Liz Truss and Kemi Badenoch were all there. What an interesting choice of date night that would have been.

Dr Lola Salem is from France and is a trained opera singer. She teaches music at Oriel College, and French at Wadham College and St Catherine’s College.  Her LinkedIn says, “My post-doctoral research focuses on 17th-century French opera, singers, and patronage through the lenses of economic and legal thought. I also consider what the problem-solving strategies from that period can teach us about renewing contemporary cultural policy in a time of economic and political crisis.” I don’t know what that means, but it sounds very deep and meaningful.

She also used to be an art critic for French newspapers and a UK culture magazine called The Critic? And she volunteered at the St Michael at the North Gate church in Oxford while she was doing her PhD at the uni. And she was a choral scholar at St John’s College. Honestly, she’s got quite the CV.

Michael Gove was married to the journalist Sarah Vine for over 20 years. They split in 2021. Michael Gove is one of the many, many Tory politicians to have gone to Oxford Uni. He studied English at Lady Margaret Hall.
