Revealed: Exactly how rich each Oxbridge college is right now
Some of the older colleges are richer than Taylor Swift
It’s no secret that the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford are absolutely loaded. As well as the universities themselves being minted, the individual Oxbridge colleges are all sitting on loads of cash. Here are all the Oxbridge colleges ranked by exactly how rich they are right now.
The net worths of different Oxbridge colleges varies wildly. Trinity College at the University of Cambridge is easily the richest Oxbridge college. It has a truly eye-watering £2.2 billion. Trinity is so astonishingly rich because Henry VIII gave it loads of land in 1546 from Catholic monasteries he’d ransacked. Really. In addition to having loads of land in Cambridge, Trinity also owns the O2 Arena in London and most of the Port of Felixstowe, which is Britain’s biggest container port.
The varying wealth of Oxbridge colleges is one of the many reasons why students end up with very different university experiences. The wealthier colleges have much more money to spend on financial aid, travel grants and subsidising accommodation. However, there is a quite a strong correlation between which Oxbridge colleges are the richest, and which Oxbridge colleges are seen by students as being the snootiest and most stressful.
All the total net assets of these Oxbridge colleges come from their annual financial reports. That’s right, I read 67 financial reports so you wouldn’t have to! *Jazz hands*. The data for Christ’s College, Magdalene College, Queens’ College, Selwyn College, and Sidney Sussex College at the University of Cambridge is correct as of summer 2024. For all the other Oxbridge colleges, the figure is correct as of summer 2023.
