After parties made safer and more accessible with Leeds Beckett’s late night cabs

Veezu’s ‘Safe Rides’ scheme has returned to Leeds in collaboration with the university’s Students’ Union

Veezu’s “Safe Rides” scheme has returned to Leeds to help students get home safely from nights out, regardless of whether they have money for the fare.

Getting home from a late night out can feel scary, whether you’re returning from a party or a library study session. Any feelings of fear around late-night travels are only intensified when you’re alone or have little to no money in hand.

According to Leeds Live, Veezu, the city’s private hire and taxi service, along with the Leeds Beckett Students’ Union, have brought back their “Safe Rides” initiative to ease these feelings of fear for students.

Formerly known as Amber Cars, Veezu has been collaborating with Leeds Beckett University for over 20 years.

Whether heading back to university halls and student housing, or finding yourself in need of a police station or local hospital, students can book their late-night journeys with Veezu’s 24/7 cab service.

So, how does it work?

All students need to do is ring 0113 831 4004 quoting “Student Safe Rides scheme”. They then pass on their basic student identification details.

In case callers aren’t carrying their student card and don’t know their student number, they can provide their university email address instead.

Their taxi home will then be sent on a priority basis and the expense will be covered by their students’ union. People using the scheme are given a three day window to repay the outstanding fare.

The service is not just restricted to Leeds Beckett and includes students from the University of Leeds too.

All driving partners are DBS checked and all union staff undergo specialist training, ensuring top-notch safety and service for students’ travels.

Chris Neary, the operations director at Veezu in Leeds, expressed the motivation behind the scheme.

He said: “We are committed to getting people home safely by providing a service that offers emergency transport for students who find themselves stuck, unable to pay and in need of a ride home.”
