Right, is it just me who didn’t know the meaning behind N-Dubz’s name?

We should all be very ashamed of ourselves

More than a decade after their initial split, Tulisa shocked the nation on Monday as she revealed the meaning behind N-Dubz’s signature name.

From 2000 to 2011, cousins Dappy and Tulisa, and their friend Fazer, formed the hip-hop rap trio N-Dubz. Though controversy followed the band, they dominated their own little niche of the UK music scene before splitting up in 2011. Throughout their career, they were nominated for one BRIT Award, won three MOBO Awards, and toured the world with songs like Playing with Fire, I Need You, and Strong Again.

After pursuing their own solo careers to varying success, the trio came back together in 2022 with new single Charmer and their Back to the Future Tour.

Tulisa revealed the meaning behind N-Dubz’s name on I’m a Celeb

During Monday night’s I’m a Celeb episode, which also saw the first foray into the Wagatha Christie trial, Oti Mabuse asked where the trio got their name from.

Soon enough Tulisa confirmed that N-Dubz is a nod to their home in northwest London. The “N” obviously stands for north, with the “Dubz” alluding to the sound you make for the letter “W”. It’s a stretch, I know.

All three of the N-Dubz members hail from Camden Town and essentially grew up together, with Dappy and Fazer first meeting for the first time at a karate class. They became best friends at school before Tulisa was even in the picture.

“I’m N-Dubz!” Oti shouted in response as she is now living in northwest London herself.

We are all fake N-Dubz fans

N-Dubz tracks were routinely played at my school discos, and yet, it’s only now in 2024 that I am realising the genius behind their signature name. Thankfully I’m not alone as many people took to Twitter to share similarly shocked responses. It seems we all need an education in British pop culture.

One person penned: “I was today years old when I realised N-Dubz stood for NW.”

“N-Dubz is NW postcode… was this public knowledge… #ImACeleb #ImACelebrity,” another questioned, while a third echoed, “Me coming to Twitter to see if anyone else knew N-Dubz was NW #ImACeleb.”

Another said: “Sorry I’m absolutely hysterical at ima celebrate after Tulisa explained N-Dubz means northwest London and Oti said omg I’m N-Dubz and Tulisa went ‘na na naiiii’.”

You can add the N-Dubz name revelation to the list of things we learned this week alongside the reason Tulisa’s face looks so different and why the numbers are longer on I’m a Celeb shirts.
