Video shows the moment a firework was shot at bystanders during display in Cardiff Bay

‘I was metres away from where it exploded and I heard screams’

Video footage has shown the moment a firework was shot at bystanders last night during a display in Cardiff Bay.

In a video obtained by The Cardiff Tab, a firework can be seen exploding in front of people’s faces, causing them to scream and run away whilst smoke surrounds the area.

The person filming can then be seen turning around, heading away from the crowd, shouting: “Guys, guys, guys,” with the person next to her saying: “Fucking hell, are you all right? Run, run, run.”

Screams can be heard in the background and people can also be seen moving away from an area of the Bay.

A man near the woman filming added: “There are boys over there aiming them at people.”

In the video, as the people behind the camera move to safety, you can hear them say: “They are literally targeting people” and “There’s boys over there that’s aiming it at people”.

A number of Cardiff students have come forward with reports about the incident, branding it “horrific”.

The Bay is a popular destination for firework shows on Guy Fawkes Night, often drawing in large crowds to celebrate.

At approximately 8:45pm, five minutes into the show, people started noticing increasingly loud and close-sounding fireworks. Initially, there was no reason for alarm.

One witness told The Cardiff Tab, that they had seen some “young lads […] firing fireworks into the Roald Dahl Plass… then we stood in front of the railings overlooking the Bay to watch the next display.

“Then someone in front of the Senedd building shot a firework just above the crowd and then one directly into it.”

“I was metres away from where it exploded and I heard screams,” she said.

“On instinct I bolted away and checked myself for burns, but luckily I was untouched.”

There are several videos circulating online, with people describing the incident as “very scary”.

“As I was running a firework flew straight past me and hit the floor next to a group of girls,” another witness said.

“Within seconds police vans flooded the bay taking statements from people. The guy shooting the fireworks was hooded and had a mask on so no one could see who he was.”

Adding: “As we ran my friend group got split up and we were all shaking, we got in the car and left straight away”.

A South Wales Police spokesperson said: “Police officers were called at around 8.45pm on Tuesday, November 5 to reports of fireworks being directed towards members of the public in the vicinity of the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay.

“Several officers were deployed to the location.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“Investigations continue.”
