Breaking up marriages to stealing boats: Here’s every time Rory from Gilmore Girls sucked
Unfortunately for Rory, being a felon does not go unnoticed
Rory Gilmore isn’t best known for having perfect morals and values, but who are we to judge? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
During her time at Chilton, Yale, and everywhere in between, Rory took prioritising herself to the next level. Did she take a bus ride to New York without telling anyone? Yes. Did she run away to her grandparents after a minor disagreement with Lorelai? Yes. Was she unfaithful in every relationship? Major yes. The list goes on.
So, we’ve made a complete guide to every time Rory sucked across all seven Gilmore Girls seasons, including within the Year in the Life special.
Breaking up a marriage
Perhaps the most memorable of her lack of values: Sleeping with Dean when he was recently married to Lindsay. The girl code in this episode was far from existent, revealing a side of Rory that many viewers have said on TikTok is the “downfall” of her character.
The words “he’s my Dean” are permanently burned into the back of any viewer’s brain; trust me, the second hand embarrassment is beyond real. This might just be her worst pick me moment of them all.
Ending a marriage for the sake of a whirlwind, rocky relationship is definitely in the “Rory sucks” category.
Oh, and not to forget she also was the other woman in Logan’s relationship (and her own) in the Year in the Life episodes. Despite all of her years spent at some of the most prestigious academic institutions, Rory still couldn’t grasp the definition of maturity.
She stole a boat
Most Read
Whilst it isn’t as emotionally damaging as interfering in someone’s legally bound relationship, this was quite literally incriminating.
In season five, Rory took it upon herself to steal a yacht with Logan. Rory would define this as “Moby Dick inspired”, or to anyone else – a felony.
Even though she faced the consequences in this situation (a night in a cell and 300 hours of community service), both her mother’s and grandparent’s lack of care, Logan’s lawyers and Rory’s victim mentality. she gets away with it pretty easily.
Definitely a sucky move.
Ditching Lane as soon as she gets a boyfriend
When Rory and Dean first got together, she acted as though her friendship with Lane had never even existed. She acted dismissive during their conversations, spent a lot less time together and overall really distanced herself from their friendship.
In true Rory style, she then hypocritically disapproved of Lane’s first boyfriend Henry. Could she ever be happy for anyone but herself?
She cheated on multiple people?!
This seems to be a running theme, with her moral compass completely out of whack.
Alongside the affairs she engaged in in her adult life, Rory Gilmore was partial to an unfaithful kiss or two. Amongst all seven seasons, she cheated on Dean with Jess, Logan with Jess, Paul with Logan.
I guess she’s familiar with the phrase reuse and recycle, and what a brilliant environmentalist she is.
Constantly running away from home
Rory has done this not once, not twice, but three times.
Remember that time she took the bus to New York to find Jess? Nobody knew, AND it was Lorelai’s graduation day.
She took refuge in her grandparents’ multi-million dollar home after arguing with Lorelai, which was especially spiteful considering her mother’s difficult relationship with her parents, not cool Rory, not cool.
Ironically, she also ran away from her grandparents in season six back to Lorelai, because she was mad at them.
Talk about running away from your problems.
She even a ballerina
Now, this was evidently her worst moment to date, using journalism as a scapegoat to be a mean girl.
The comments Rory made about the ballerina were distasteful, condescending and plain rude. She was arguably underqualified in the first place to be writing a “review” on the ballet, a hobby she never had. Not only this, but she excused herself for being under the critique of her editor, Doyle. An apology, or never having written the article, would be better received.
I hope she didn’t put this one on her resumé.
Mocking Logan for his privilege, without being able to recognise her own
Rory spent a lot of time in the show complaining about her financial position (despite going to private school and having a takeaway for dinner every night), and then continued to mock Logan for his arrogant attitude towards money and status.
Even though Logan’s views weren’t the most attractive, downplaying your privilege and not being able to recognise it is much worse.
Not remembering her boyfriend’s name
To top it all off, Rory couldn’t even remember her partner’s name.
In the Year in the Life special, Rory is dating Paul (at least we can remember) and seemingly has been for a while, yet she can’t quite memorise his first name.
That’s pretty low, but maybe the least harmful time instance where Rory from Gilmore Girls sucked.
