Charli D’Amelio called out for ‘cosplaying as working class’ for pretending to work at Walmart

She has an estimated net worth of $20 million

Millionaire TikToker Charli D’Amelio has been called out for “cosplaying as working class” after she was filmed dressed up as a Walmart employee scanning shopping at the till.

Charli was at Walmart as part of her promotion for the launch of her new popcorn line, Be Happy Snacks. She can be seen at the till, in a Walmart uniform, smiling and laughing as she scans the popcorn.

With 151.6 million followers on TikTok, the 19-year-old is the second most-followed person on the app. She first-gained popularity by posting viral dance videos in 2020. As of 2023, she has an estimated net worth of $20 million.

One person posted a TikTok of Charli at Walmart with the caption: “These super rich and privileged influencers cosplaying as minimum wage workers…”

One comment said: “I wish I had enough money to cosplay as a retail worker, so fun being in the working class.” Another added: “I just got sent home from my cashier job at Walmart for having a break down on the register because I was exhausted. Glad she’s having fun though.”

On X, someone said: “Maybe I’m just a hater but something about a rich person pretending to be a working class citizen just rubs me in the wrong way.”

Another TikToker posted a video with the text: “At this point whoever is managing the D’Amelio’s is praying on their downfall because who approved the idea for them to cosplay as minimum wage workers.”

The video is captioned: “Was there NO ONE on the team that said hey let’s maybe not because this seems tone deaf?”

A comment on the TikTok reads: “I was a cashier at Walmart. Had almost daily panic attacks because of anxiety. But like it’s cool she’s having fun cosplaying as poor.”

Walmart workers get paid an average of $13.69 an hour. With an estimated net worth of $20 million, it would take 146,092 hours (or 6,087 days) at Walmart to make that amount of money.

Charli’s dad, Marc D’Amelio, co-founder and the CEO of D’Amelio Brands, adressed the Walmart partnership in a news release before the popcorn’s launch. He said: “By collaborating with Walmart, we are able to offer our products to a community of food lovers who celebrate trying new flavors and products nationwide.”

Charli D’Amelio has been contacted for comment.
