Debunking the flat break-in threesome story that’s spread around pubs like wildfire

It’s been told in Manchester, London, Cambridge, Glasgow – it’s currently viral on Twitter and going around Bristol

| UPDATED

I wonder perhaps if you’ve ever heard a particular, specific, unquestionably mad story. It’s a story that you did not believe, until your friend who told you wapped out the visual evidence and left you spluttering into your pint in disbelief. I heard such a story the other night in the pub. On this particular instance, the pub group I was with were all assembled for me – leaving drinks. Because of this, a lot of different groups were mingling, people who mix in different circles and live in different places. It quickly transpired that the wild story was so wild that it had spread across all different groups, with everyone believing their version was the original and true one. It’s a story of a basement flat, a break-in and a threesome – and we need to get it debunked.

The story (brace yourselves)

I’m about to tell you the story in its core form, stripping it back to the main elements that persist wherever the story surfaces. The story goes that someone has moved into a flat, and they notice that things in their room keep moving around. Nothing stolen, but when the person returns to their room it just feels not quite how they left it.

The person accuses their flatmates of being behind it, but they deny it. They set up a motion sensing camera and then a few days later the person gets alerted by the camera that it’s been triggered. When the person checks the camera, they see strangers having a threesome orgy in their bedroom.

It’s important to note that when people hear or tell this story, there’s a picture from the bedroom that gets shown with it. No one who tells the story knows the friend personally or has been in their bedroom, it’s always like a “This happened to my friend’s mate” situation.

Here’s the image in question, apologies in advance.

The Manchester variation

This one tells of a girl moving down to London from Manchester and into a basement flat in Hackney. The story goes exactly as follows above and then when she finds out about it she moves back up to Manchester.

The Cambridge variation

Told by a Cambridge student, this one has the variation of the flat not being in a basement but on a third floor flat, and the intruders shimmy up a drainpipe to break-in for the threesome apparently. The Cambridge variation also states that the intruders were homeless, although how they knew that from the camera I’ve got no idea. The least viable tale of the bunch methinks.

The London variation

This one is in a basement flat in De Beauvoir, a small bit of London in the middle of Angel and Dalston. This one dates back to November 2018 – and the story is still doing the rounds right now.

Bristol – Feb 2023: The story goes viral on Twitter

Well, right on cue – here we go again.

https://twitter.com/sspencerukk/status/1622901251301048326?s=20&t=_R9A41WN8IYOwWPk4Q4fIA

The exact same story, the exact same picture. Viral again on Twitter with 33,100 likes. It’s all a lie, people!

DEBUNKED

The reason we managed to debunk the story is how so many people around the group knew the story, even though it had variations it was the same picture that was the thread that linked them together. It’s spread like wildfire – a mad story from a friend of a friend but there’s never any proof it’s actually happened beyond the same pic everyone tells the story with.

I reverse image searched the picture of the flat break-in threesome, sadly. I was expecting it to pull up a load of porn, but there was nothing. Worryingly, this makes me think that somewhere down the line this story is actually true – but it took on urban legend form in WhatsApp forwarding and campfire tales over a few pints at the pub.
