An 18-year-old man has been arrested following a serious report of sexual assault in York.

The incident occurred in the Memorial Gardens, Leeman Road by York Rail Station yesterday, 16th June and was reported to the police at 4:41 am.

The suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon and has been released on conditional bail whilst the enquiries continue. The gardens have now fully reopened to the public.

The woman is receiving specialist support while the police investigation continues.

The North Yorkshire Police said: “Witnesses or anyone with information are urged to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option one, and speak to the Force Control Room.
