The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be coming to Leamington Spa

Lawn bowls will be played at Victoria Park

Birmingham has just won the bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, with Leamington Spa being host to the lawn bowls competition.

Earlier this year Birmingham beat Liverpool to be Britain’s candidate city, becoming the only city to bid for the sporting competition.

Birmingham will become the third English city to host the Games, following London and Manchester which took place in 1934 and 2002 respectively.

Lawn bowls will be played at Victoria Park in Leamington Spa – the home of Bowls England, where the English national championships take place in August annually.

Sian Honnor, previous Bronze and Gold Medalist at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively, told The Tab, "It's brilliant that Birmingham will be hosting the Commonwealth Games and within that the bowls will be at Leamington Spa. I know that Bowls England will pull out all the stops to ensure the greens are at their best. For those England players competing it will be an amazing experience to take part in a home games."

Honnor was recently selected to represent England in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Current Warwick students are also excited by the Games coming to their local town, with some considering renting our their room to prospective spectators. A similar thing happened in Cardiff, where students charged extortionate rates to rent their rooms out for the Champions League Final.
