We’re recruiting new writers! Here’s why you should join The Tab Nottingham’s team

Come to our open meeting from 5pm on Monday 30th September at Mooch!

As the academic year kicks off in full force, we are excited to welcome any new students wanting to join The Tab Nottingham’s team of writers.

You don’t need any previous experience, just a passion for writing and fun outlook on uni life. If this sounds like you, we’d love for you to get involved.

We are holding an open meeting on Monday 3oth September in Mooch from 5pm to 7pm. This is the perfect chance to meet our editorial team as well as other student writers. It is also a chance to ask any questions you may have about The Tab.

So, what is The Tab?

The Tab is a national media outlet that covers everything from news, student life, and youth culture and has amassed over nine million readers a month. Originally founded by three students from Cambridge University, The Tab is now involved in nearly 30 unis across the country, where student reporters write articles that are important to young people.

The national site covers stories from Love Island to celebrities controversies to university scandals. There’s really something for everyone on there.

Also, if you join a local team, you’ll get a chance to write for the national site, and maybe also join The Tab HQ writers in London.

So, whether you’re looking for a chance to write fun, witty articles instead of serious academic essays, or you want to gain valuable experience in student journalism, here are all the reasons to join The Tab.

You get the freedom to write about what you want

Although we offer weekly pitches, we highly encourage writers to submit their own article ideas. If it’s important to you, the chances are that other students will care about it too. We are always keen to hear about new ideas and support writers exploring their originality.

You might find yourself writing articles such as:

• A comprehensive list of all the best places in Nottingham for a first date.

•  Save your pennies: The best food places in Notts with a student discount.

Former Nottingham University student found guilty of female genital mutilation charge.

It’s a low pressure, fun way to build up a portfolio

If you are looking to find a job in the journalism industry, having a portfolio is really important. Writing for The Tab is perfect to do this as you can pick and choose how many articles to write depending on the level of uni work you have, or any other responsibilities.

There are no strict deadlines, unless it’s breaking news, and no specified amount of articles you have to write, giving you freedom over how much you contribute.

You can also write national stories too which further helps bulk out that CV and gain experience.

There’s no experience needed

Never written an article before? No problem!

You don’t need any experience to write for us, as we have an editorial team that will support you in every step of the process in getting your articles published.

As long as you’re enthusiastic, then it doesn’t matter what year you’re in or what course you study. Our team will help you feel confident in writing and publishing articles.

You’ll get the inside scoop

Writing for The Tab means that you will have a heads up on what’s going on around campus before anyone else.

Knowing people and being the kind of person people want to go to with good stories is a sure fire way of finding leads to write interesting stories about.

You’ll gain valuable experience

Apart from having fun and getting to write about issues that are important to you, writing for The Tab looks great on your CV and is perfect for anyone looking to gain experience in journalism.

The Tab gives you experience working for a team from a nationally renowned media outlet so writing for us is the perfect opportunity for those wanting to improve their CV.

It’s a great opportunity to make friends and meet like minded people

Writing for The Tab means meeting lots of other students with similar interests. It is perfect for anyone looking to make some new friends.

Being involved with The Tab doesn’t mean sitting alone in the library desperately trying to finish an article. We organise plenty of writers meetings which are perfect for catching up with other writers as well as claiming pitches and discussing original ideas.

This year we want to organise more socials so writers can have some fun and make friends outside of writing and coming to meetings.

You’ll be joining a national team supported by full time journalists

The Tab Nottingham has a close working relationship to The Tab’s national team in London, which is run by full-time experienced journalists. They are always ready to help support pieces you are working on, and offer excellent advice budding journalists or those looking to improve their writing.

You’ll be writing for a nationally recognised organisation whose stories regularly get picked up by UK-wide newspapers

Our website is regularly viewed by writers and editors at national newspapers, meaning that writing for us is the perfect way to get recognised on a national level.

Publications such as The Daily Mail and the BBC have previously picked up stories by The Tab which allows writers to get their work recognised by a wider audience.

One writer even got interviewed by Jeremy Kyle, so the possibilities are endless!

Our open meeting is for everyone. No matter what you study or what year you’re in – if you are keen to write, please come along.

You don’t need any experience or ideas but if you have any further questions, send us a message on Instagram @thetab_nottingham.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday 3oth September from 5pm at Mooch.
