What’s going on in Newcastle this International Women’s Day

Just some of the great things you can get up to in Newcastle to celebrate!


March 8th marks International Women’s Day and events are taking place across Newcastle University and throughout the city to commemorate.

A vast variation of national events can be found on the IWD website but here is The Newcastle Tab’s round-up of some of the cool things going on right here that you can get involved with; there’s something for everyone, from runs, to seminars, to science masterclasses…

University events

IWD interactive coffee and networking morning – 8th March 10am, @The Catalyst, NE4 5TG (Free)

Newcastle University is hosting an interactive coffee and networking morning this Wednesday with The UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing, VOICE® and Oxford Innovation Space to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and #EmbraceEquity.

The event promises several interactive and informative stations to showcase some of this year’s International Women’s Day missions, and chance to meet new and interesting people.

Talks/seminars

COCO celebrates International Women’s Day #EmbraceEquity – 8th March 18:00-19:30, Florence Kirkby Lecture Theatre, NE4 5TG (Free) 

This event includes talks from numerous inspirational women including; Freelance journalist, Loujane Alasi; Menopause educator, Sharon MacArthur; STEM student, Abigael Ayoo and lecturer, Drew Dalton who will all be sharing their personal experiences with inequity as the event aims to #EmbraceEquity.

If you’re looking for even more reasons to attend COCO’s IWD event, Newcastle University Business School have kindly sponsored canapés and drinks so the food and drink will be flowing all evening.

Activities

International Women’s Day Data Science Masterclasses – 8th March 13:00-16:00, @The Catalyst, NE4 5TG (Free)

If the aforementioned events don’t sound quite up your street why not try out an IWD science master class! Throughout the afternoon, data scientists Louise Braithwaite MSc, Dr Hollie Johnson and Dr Antonia Kontaratou, will each lead a 90-minute data science masterclass based on varying areas of interest, including; Data Visualisation, Introduction to Natural Language Processing (NLP) with Twitter and HuggingFace and Success with Data Science.

Sports

This Girl Can 5K Run/Jog/Walk – 8th March 18:00-19:00, @Exhibition Park (Free) 

If sport is more up your street, “This Girl Can” are hosting a 5k run/jog/walk in Exhibition Park this Wednesday to celebrate IWD – anyone is free to participate in the event and participants are invited to dress up!

Arts

Born Lippy & Wor Lasses present an International Women’s Day Special – 8th March 19:00-22:00, @Cabolt studios, NE2 1AP (£6.94)

Born Lippy & Wor Lasses presents an International Women’s Day Special consisting of all female musicians and poets. The headliners for the evening include; Irish poet, Elizabeth McGeown and Irish singer songwriter, poet and producer, Mimi Merrow with support from Tahmina Ali and Al Redman. The night will also include an open mic poetry slam, what more could you want!
