Loughborough’s new logo causes outrage

It looks like Comic Sans

A new Luff logo has been labelled “unprofessional” and “childish”.

Students past and present were outraged by the new design, which replaces the 1996 logo of the coat of arms – which also caused controversy at the time.

The Uni said: “[The old logo] doesn’t work very well online and can’t be customised. It is best suited for print publications and was launched at a time when the world was only just starting to go digital.

“Over the years, people have tried to customise the logo, but because of the lack of flexibility this produces an almost random series of images.”

Judy Wing, PR Director for the uni, said: “The Coat of Arms will continue to be used” and the “new logo has been designed primarily for digital” and that it will be used in other areas.

Students have been announcing their anger over Facebook, as many of them felt that Loughborough students should have been consulted and involved within the logo selection process.

In true Loughborough fashion, a petition has been made online to revoke the 2015 uni rebrand, which has gained over 7,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

The petition says: “Loughborough University has been consistently ranked a top 15 UK university and has established a history of awards as the “best student experience.

“The purple and pink shield emblem has become iconic in attaching these ideas of prestige, heritage and respect.

“The new brand identity instantaneously loses all of these values. This significantly devalues the brand for stakeholders including all students, staff and alumni.”

Many students have been encouraging their peers to sign this petition, such as Adam, a second year at the uni, who wrote to his Facebook friends: “Right guys, sign this petition to stop Loughborough University going ahead with their diabolical re-brand”.
