Leeds grads win gold and silver in Rio

The Brownlees are the first brothers to take first and second since 1960

Leeds graduates Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee have claimed gold and silver medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The two brothers competed in the triathlon and both secured times just over the 1 hour 45 mark.

Alistair Brownlee took gold, while younger brother Jonathan secured silver. The pair finished just six seconds apart.

South African Henri Schoeman earned the bronze medal finishing 36 seconds after Jonathan Brownlee crossed the finish line.

Another Leeds grad, Gorden Benson, competed in the triathlon – but dropped out in the penultimate lap.

The brothers have now secured four Olympic medals between them, with Alistair earning gold at both London in 2012 and Rio, while Jonathan earned a bronze in London and silver in Rio.
